whs Of course, it depends on how much of the tip broke off.

I PICKED UP A NEW ST CROIX ROD LAST YEAR rgmn rgmn rgmn we went out fishing and I got a fluke on it and took it on the boat and the tip broke  rgmn rgmn they said send it back and it will cost me $30.00 to send it back and I paid $120.00 for it.

If the rod is only a year old it is still under warranty.  All you need to do is return it to St. Croix (shipping is $10) along with a check for $20 and they will replace it.  Total cost for a new rod $30.  That doesn't sound like a bad deal to me. ;)

so I dont think the st will hole up again rgmn rgmn rgmn

St. Croix makes a great rod! t^  I own close to a dozen of them and haven't had a single issue with rod breakage.  You kind of hinted that you were probably guilty of doing some high sticking anyway.  This is probably one of the easiest ways to break a high quality graphite rod.

buy a loomis
loomis

So instead of paying a measly $30 to get a brand new St. Croix, you guys are suggesting he spend another $150 to $300 on a Loomis?

Don't get me wrong Loomis makes a great rod too.  I have one and love it.  But I know guys that have snapped them as well.  You should remember that it is Gary Loomis himself who's famous phrase is, "I can build a rod you can't break, but you wouldn't want to fish with it."

In other words, if you're going high end (Loomis, St. Croix, etc.) there is always a chance you may break a rod, if you don't treat it properly.  My advice to those guys that are hard on their tackle (i.e. tossing them in the back of the truck, banging them on the gunwale, high sticking, etc.) is you should probably buy an Ugly Stik.  And that is not meant as an insult.  Many folks out there could not be bothered with having to take care of their fishing rod, and that's fine.  An Ugly Stik is made for that type of fisherman.  It is made on a very tough and forgiving blank.  There is a good reason why it is the best selling rod in the country.

Of course the downside of all that forgiveness and toughness is that those rods are typically heavy with very soft, unresponsive actions.  I don't enjoy fishing with them.  But hey.  To each his own.  TT^

If you want to get a Loomis, by all means do so!  But you also might as well spend $30 to get a brand new St. Croix!  t^

I always send them [Loomis rods] back for 50 bucks they give me a brand new one no questions asked

A typical $200 American made rod costs the company about $50 to make.  So if you break one, of course they have no problem replacing it for you for $50!  St. Croix is offering a replacement for $20.  The other $10 is to ship the rod to them.

my thing is ,If I have to send it back and spend $30.00 and get a new one and they tell me that I have to send them $50.00 for a new one . It is not worth it  5hrug 5hrug

This I don't understand at all.  Maybe you could clarify it a little.  It is only going to cost you $30 total (mostly for shipping and handling).  I don't understand where the $50 comes in. 5hrug

See if Dicks sells that rod. Buy a new one and extended warranty. Wait a week and bring back the first one.

Well, I can see that there are more than a few of you out there that failed your Ethics exams!  nosmly

Man Deisel- I like the way you think....let the store pay for the shipping and they can write it off. Of course, better not break the new one until you return the old one!

Retailers are not authorized to take back defective or broken St. Croix rods.  St. Croix's policy is to deal with the customer directly.  If a store does take a rod back in the spirit of customer service, that store receives no credit for the broken rod and it will come off their bottom line.  This, in turn, may deprive some very hard working, underpaid employee of said store from getting their extremely meager (yet important) quarterly bonus.  As  result, some children may go hungry and the divorce rate amongst retailers may climb. :-\  ;D

Rugman,

If you need any help getting your rod replaced, shoot me a PM and I'll walk you through it. ;)
