Irish Ayes fluking 6-30
« on: June 30, 2008, 07:09:45 PM »
Left the dock to day with 6 on board. Had me, Bob Cole, Maurice, Dave C, Ralph and Harold looking to catch fluke.

Started the day by heading south out of Shark River Inlet. Fished a couple of previous (last year)well producing spots and got nothing.

By noon time it looked like a skunk day for us. Could not even get a short fluker to bite.

Moved north and fished two spots south of Asbury Park. Still had the skunk odor eminating, although a pod of bunker came swimming past. I snagged one (didn't have my live well aboard) and sent it down to the bottom. No one home.  :'( Snagged a couple more for fresh strips for fluke.

Decided to make a big move and went north of Long Branch. Sent the bunker back down to knock on some more doors. Also had the fluke lines out. After about ten minutes the bunker rod gives a short run off. I picked up the rod and the line starts paying out again. I set the Avet reel to strike and the line tightened up and the pole took on a nice bend. After a short fight I pulled a 40 inch striper to the net.

Of course, that made my day! The skunk odor had vanished.

We continued to fluke fish as I was scanning the sea for more bunker pods. Didn't see any.

Another drift was made on this spot and the fluke started to make a showing.  Seems the fluke bite is in the afternoon, as I had two other trips cut short by storms just as we were getting into catching in the afternoon.

After several drifts over this same real estate we managed to put six fluke in the box and three nice sea bass. The big fluke today went to Bob Cole at 24 inches. Bob was also high hook with four of the six keepers. Here's a pic of our catch for today.

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.
