Reel Class Fluke 7/1
« on: July 01, 2008, 05:57:46 PM »
Had my good friend Billy Vivona of XL Rods aboard today with his parents Vince and Angela.  My goal was to put them on some keeper fluke, and with them being from NY they don't see too many "keeper" fluke in their home waters..  So we headed for some deeper water around some snags and high spots near the SG Reef and fished bucktails with strips (bunker, squid) and large spearing.

Big groundswell from the SE to start out the day, and a hard current offshore going from S to N made things a bit tough.  Using kil-rigs and standard bucktail rigs, we really had a tough time for the first few hours putting anything in the boat.  We'd catch a few, re-do the drift, then have no life.  Some skates and dogfish mixed in as well, and once we were on the snags themselves, we picked away at some small seabass.

By 11 the heave got to Billy's parents, so we decided to call it a day... On the way in we found some bunker getting blown up by a thresher, pretty cool sight.  Once in the river I talked the crew into doing at least a few drifts between the Canal and the 35 bridge, and we did so.

Immediately found a GOOD pick of fluke in the river, some real small fish mixed in with lots of measurables, and shockingly, 7 more keepers to 19.5".  Fish bit on fresh spearing and gulp baits fished on the kil-rigs and on bucktails.  The fish were pretty much in the same small spot we had them on Sunday, on the same tide phase (end of outgoing).

Finished the day at 1:30 with 9 fish in the box to 19.5" out of around 50 fish, great way to finish the day with some meat in the box!!   TT^

Nice catch. Way to stick with it and put your patrons on some keepers.  t^

I was out yesterday and it seemed the fluke bite outside didn't happen until the afternoon.

Nice report, sounds like a good day. People should try fishing the river more often, I hear most people complaining that there's nothing but shorts in the river, and I always chuckle to myself, and say ok. We always pick up keepers right on the channel edge between channel markers 9 and 11, rarely find a need to travel anywhere else for fluke on the river.

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

Can you please tell me what you mean by "kil-rigs"?
