had a scare in the fog today
« on: July 07, 2008, 06:24:55 PM »
Left the dock with five aboard today. Bob Cole, Harold, Captain Mike, Hareball and myself. Again, a blanket of fog.

Running with the electronics we got to our first spot in due time. Drifted for a bit and picked up some short fluke.

Decided to move further north. Visibility was under 1/8 of a mile. My eyes were going from the radar, to the chartplotter to the seas. Constant back and forth. We were travelling about 5 knots when I see not far off of the port bow a large black object. Fear set in for a second as I thought I was about to run into a boat that I somehow missed on the radar and in scanning the area. I quickly pulled the throttle back to nuetral. Then I spot a giant flat tail come out of the water behind a massive whale! Scared the living hell out of me! I yelled to the crew and they spotted it as it cruised past our port side at a respectable distance.

Continued onto our next fishing spot uneventfully.

Back to fishing and starting to catch some keeper fluke and seabass.

At about 1pm the fog lifted. We finished the day with 5 keeper fluke with Captain Mike being hight hook with two and also snatching the largest fish pool with a 22 inch fluke.
Also put ten seabass on ice. Threw back at least a three man limit of last years keeper fluke and many more smaller than that.

Will be out again tomorrow.
No bunker spotted today. Seas were pretty much flat, no wind in the morning and a very slight breeze in the afternoon. Not the best conditions for fluking.

They are down there Capt Joe, somebody needs to pull one or 2 of them up a season. TT^

What depth were we fishing? That one drop seemed pretty deep yet Bob was able to use 2oz! I used 4 and it was glued to the bottom. rofla

Bob, the last area we were in was between 30 and 40 feet of water. The fish are there, just need to go over them to catch them.  TT^

With the lack of drift, you could hold bottom with an ounce, if we had that size sinker on the boat.  ;D

great report guys .. never saw a whale in the water before, pretty neat i must say..
Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.
