I've got a lot to learn!!
« on: July 21, 2008, 11:47:02 PM »
Took the boat out of Atlantic Highlands for our maiden voyage on Saturday morning with 3 buddies.  We were dead set on finding the bunker pods and going after bass.  To make a long story short, it turned out to be a boating trip and not a fishing one.  Never found the bunker, no bites, not even a fluke! (which we attempted as a last ditch effort)

I tried to get some friendly info on the radio-thought maybe fellow fisherman would share some bunker sightings-I couldn't even get a response on a radio check??!!!!

Although it was nice to be out on the water, it was frustrating with such high hopes for rod bending action.

I haven't lost hope-will get back out there soon...

Dave

Good luck calling for info like that on the radio.  The majority of guys will not give you the time of day unless they know you and you know their code words.

Your best bet is to find out if any of our guys are out and give them a call via cell phone or on the designated channels they have posted in the Members Den, Contact Network information section.

With your 12 posts you are OK to get onto that forum.  Make sure to put your info there as well.

Happy Catching

More importantly... are you sure your radio is working? I've never heard a radio check go unanswered out there. Before you go out again you should do a radio check, either with someone in your marina (if you have one) or at the ramp if you don't.

If you carry a hand held, you could always have someone stand 50 feet away and see if you are broadcasting. Just because you can hear doesn't mean others can hear you. I had a radio that for some reason only transmitted on one channel, I could hear every one but no one could hear me.

Good luck on your next trip, the fish will come....

the radio is good for saftey, but like rod said, if your not in the click out there, its useless.

Thats the truth!
The best thing to do at the hook until you find your own spots is fish where you see other boats. There are always a lot of boats out there and you will catch fish. Once you catch fish, spend the rest of the day looking for some new spots.
Good luck and if you ever see me out there, give a yell. I don't have a problem helping guys out if I am on fish.

I appreciate the feedback guys-

I will definitely check the radio next time before going out.  When I get a chance I will upload my info as well.

Before next trip, I will post and check for some more pointers.  It may be a few weeks, my wife just had our first baby on Sunday-so I have to trade the rod for a bottle!!

Is there a channel that members use here? Personally, I've never had a radio check go unanswered either. I may not get a location from someone, but skippers have always let me know they received my transmission.

Striper,

Get a good chart, you can reference the points where you hear fishing reports from ie, the site, other sites, The Fisherman Mag, etc.

Most reports are in general as specific spots will not be given up.

When you travel keep an eye on your FF, I have found many spots (lumps, bumps, dips, etc) going from one place to another that were not marked on any chart.

Remember the ocean is like a desert, the life is found on the oasis (wrecks, obstructions, channels, lumps, holes, etc. these hold bait that hold bigger fish.

Explore on your own, locate the Sandy Hook Reef and ride over it, marking what you find, same with any other location. Make your own maps of a location. Keep a log with your GPS numbers, keep a fishing log....many a time these have saved the day, and it gives you a reference on the fishery.

m Congrats.. I know the feeling.  My wife had our first born August of 2006, and our second August 2007.. So I felt the pinch since it was in the middle of the fishing season.. Now my third is expected at the end of January...finances get difficult.. but I can't get the sport of fishing and boating out of my blood.

CONGRADULATIONS !!!! You and your wife have the BEST catch of the Year.

Sorry nobody got back to you on a 'Radio Check'

Most people on the water help each other with stuff like that and weather, Local information, PANs or Maydays .

I personally monitor chnl 16 and 68 and will move to another when pre determined. Good Luck out there   AJ.
