Fluke with Spromiester 7/21
« on: July 22, 2008, 09:08:27 AM »
Fished with Jeff Minnichbach (the spromiester) and his brother Ted (in from Colorado) in the familiar grounds of the reach to try and put some flatties in the box.  When we arrived just around slack tide conditions were tough.  We picked a few shorts.  As tide changed we were battling wind against and could only produce a bunch of shorts.  Disappointing as this area has put its fair share of keepers in the box over the past two and half weeks.  Around noon, we decided to make a move.  This website (can't remember who posted 5hrug) mentioned the action last friday on the Bay Ridge Flats so off we went to give it a shot.  Not familiar fishing this area so it was hunt and pick for a bit.  Water around the flats 35-40 was devoid of fish although there were some nice (bass?) marks on the screen.  As the water started to move out, the action picked up nicely.  Jeff pitched two nice NJ keepers 18.5 & 19" back for another day (boy that's tough)!  The shorty assault continued and we managed to mix in two nice NY keepers 20.5 & 21.5".  Overall, a good day.  Pretty cool fishing with lower manhattan and the statue of liberty is looking over you.
Water quality was very clean.  Temp 76.  Fish located in 15-18 ft of water.

No pics of fish and the guys.  Long day, quick clean up and on the road.

Were you concerned about being in NY waters with NJ legal fish on board?  NY is boarding boats from NJ to check on sizes.

All NJ fish were put back.  Only NY regs being adhered too!

Pilot, Nice report.  It's great to seek out new waters. Tough conditions don't help. The infamous Minnichbach rig only produced 2 keeps. Supprised!!  You'll get em next time.  T-Bone

Nice report Pilot. Not a bad catch. Jersey regs are tuff but NY regs are insane.

Bayonne,

I'm assuming it was you that posted in a previous thread about last Friday.  Thanks for the heads up.  When fishing it, you could tell this has potential to be a real fishy place.  Appreciate the insight.  Will have to give another go!
