New York Bay 8-3-08
« on: August 03, 2008, 03:00:48 PM »
Got an invite to go on my neighbors boat and I couldnt pass. Left the dock just after 8 and hit a few spots without any luck. Next we went right under the verezano bridge on the east side. My neighbor caught 2 sea robins and Jay caught 1, none for me.  :'( After a while we went to the south side of Staten Island. I caught one short fluke and my neighbor caught one right after me. We spent most of the day there and caught numerous sea robins. We stopped counting after 9 but we probably had about 15-18. All was caught on killies, we tried other bait throughout the day but killies seemed to work best. We made it back to the dock just after 2. Pretty okay day. The pix arent the best because they were taken on a cell phone.  t^

The first couple stops we got nada. only the last 2 produced fish. Water temps were in the low 70's. I could see the bait and sinker for about 3-4' under water. BTW those sea robins can really fight. I thought I hooked into a decent size fluke a couple times and it just turned out to be a robin.

Nice!  Yeah, those searobins can be deceiving!  Hooked a couple in the surf thinking I had a nice fish...then I get it up on the beach and a searobin.  Either way, it is a fish.  They make pretty decent bait too!!

nice report  t^

yeah sea robins do fight nice, but its very-VERY easy to differ the fight between a searobin and a fluke... searobins PULL your pole and even drag sometimes, sort of bounces it... fluke i can feel the flutter pecking as im reeling them in...

and yeah those BIG searobins sure do feel like sweet fish, until you notice its fat hard head and wings  >:D rofla

Nice report and good effort on the fluke. Sounds like you did have action pretty much of the day.  t^

Nice report Gymrat, and the pics look fine. Hopefully a keeper next time, at least you had good action.
