Deal Fluking 8-9
« on: August 09, 2008, 11:33:13 PM »
Started off at 3pm at Spring Lake, nothing after 30 min, so folled Norma K to Deal, was in fairly close. Another party boat there also, the Gambler I think. Very windy, out of the west at first. Whitecaps, quick drift. Got 4-5 throwbacks around 15 inches. Used spearing/ squid, keelies. Needed 6 oz. to hold. Lost several rigs in the rough bottom, so I tried a 6oz. Spro. First tipped it with squid, then spearing. Nothing. Had a bag of gulp squid, and I actually got a 15inch with it. Came in around 6:30 without a keeper. What do you all think of spro's? Never had much luck with it, way more action with small bucktail on a conventional 3 way and a spearing/ squid combo. I need some feedback on spro's, what to tip them with, if they are any good. Thanks!

Nice report!  I have never used Spro's, sorry can't help you there.  I use a bucktail jig head(any brand) with Gulp 4" swimming mullet in pink or chartreuse or white and a bucktail teaser above it in any of those colors with the gulp shrimp in the surf.  Works well for me!

Lately for fluke I have been using a bucktail with a chartreuse Gulp 4" swimming mullet with a dropper loop up about 18" and a 1/0 offset hook with a Gulp natural colored shrimp and have been doing pretty good with it.

I started using this combo a few weeks ago when Ash and I went out to IBSP.

The combo is similar to what I used in the spring at the BI.  Only difference was I used pink bucktails then and was catching blues and stripers.

You have got to keep on trying different combos till something clicks.

Great advice!!  That is certainly the key!  One day one thing works the next day something completely different works!

i'm surprised you didn't get any sea bass at the deal rocks.  were you near the markers for lobster pots?  spros have weak hooks in my opinion.  spearing worked really well in that area last thursday with white bucktails tipped with chartreuse gulp swimming mullet.  we ended up with six keeper fluke and a bunch of nice sea bass.  caught fish non stop all day.  tons of shorts, sea robins, skates, etc.
