FB weekend report
« on: August 18, 2008, 09:50:54 AM »
As my bro Rob couldn't fish this week, Dave and I  shoved the Fluka Brasi off at sunup Sat. after filling the livewell with Peanuts, and left Keansburg in a fairy thick fog heading to the Mudhole for the 1st time. The fog lightened up considerably by the time we hit the tip of the Hook, and the light chop allowed us to cruise out at a comfy 30mph. We stopped at the Mud Buoy to punch a few #s into the gps.. As we where sitting there fiddling with the gps, the water around us erupted with 8-10# Bluefish chopping bait. I quickly grabbed a jig rod, and was hooked in 2 cranks.. Dave got a jig on as I was fighting and was also hooked up in short order.. At 1 point they where boiling for 100yds in all directions around the boat.. frenzied to the point where I lost 2 jigs to fish trying to take it from the hooked one.. took a couple  more on a popper, before that met the same fate.. After  about 20  minutes of non-stop pandemonium, we reeled up and continued our mission, arriving at the area of the Arundo, where we began our troll towards the Monster Ledge. No action until about mid-day, when we had our 1st knockdown..A small Mahi about 24" that ate a Ceder Plug in the propwash as we passed a hi-flier. Unfortunately, it shook off as Dave was swinging it aboard. A short time later, we where in an area with lots of pots, so we pulled in the spread, and went pot-hopping, tossing Livies trying to raise Mahi.. Many of the pots where loaded with Pilot Fish, but we only managed 1 baby Mahi.. a pretty thing about 12"..Started back at about 3 and made a last stop at the Mud Buoy, for another crack at the blues, but despite tons of deep marks, made no further contact. Back in Keansburg by about 6.
Sunday, our buddy Ross joined Dave and I for some Flukin. Left K-burg at about 6 and made a few drops in the Reach for a bunch of way-shorts for our efforts. Decided to take advantage of the wind against tide condition and headed to Ambrose. With the wind slowing the tidal effects, we where able to comforably hold with 6 oz and I soon decked a fat 21 incher.. We continued to pick away at 'em with many that where just a few spearings short of legal, but only 1 more keeper.  After the tide began to move out, and 12oz's failed to come close to holding bottom, we moved outside to drift along the beaches, with decent action on shorts, but only 1 over the magic 18".  A major highlight came late in the day when we where about 150yds off the bathing beach.. I noticed something out of the corner of my eye, and looked up to see not 1,  but 2 young, bronzed Jersey beauties, in red bikinis paddle out from under my pulpit on surf boards! I believe they where lifeguards..We said hi and exchanged pleasantries, happy that they didn't notice the stream of drool coming out of the scuppers  hhppy ahh summer!. I'm considering trying to develop some kind of trolling lure to attract this highly desireable specie..maybe something that emulates a designer handbag.. We fished for a bit longer after that, and after a quick fuel stop , headed back to the barn with our 3 keepers at about 6pm..A fun weekend, with absolutely spectacular weather.  chrz

Nice report Mark. Troll some 20's past their snout and they will jump into the boat!  ;D

Nice catch at the mud buoy. Great effort on the troll. Doesn't matter if you catch or not, the sites are always pleasant in the deep.  t^

Great report!  Nice catch.  Great weekend of fishing!!  Gotta love the blue frenzy, despite losing more lures than you catch fish most of the time.

If you do that lure in "money" color, I think it will work the best.  Sort of like Gulp Swimming Mullet for the fluke species!!  rofla hhppy

Get s surfboard, square it off to a rectangle, paint it exactly like a $100 bill and troll that on the surface about 25yards off the beach from SH down to Deal and see what you can catch.
Thank you.
