[Last Call]

Ran out to the SH Reef with Don, Tommy and his son Ian.  We were looking for some entertainment for Ian and some relaxation for ourselves.....well some 60 Sea Bass later (only 2 keepers) and I was done fishing.  We picked up a half dozen short Blackfish, half dozen short Fluke and Don was Skating away with high look garbage!  We ran here, we ran there, checked these numbers and this spot and drifted, just couldn't get any size!  We tired Ian out and back at the barn by 2:30pm.  On a side note, does anybody know the captain of a boat named 'Black Fin'?  I'd like to ask him a question or two regarding his "drifting skills"..

Don't know the Black Fin. I'm assuming he 'cut off your drift'. A lot of that happens. Jump out in front of you and then expect you to move.

It wasn't that he short drifted me, it's that he just about drifted into me while anchored.  His stern was less than 5' from my bow before he realized he had better do something.  How he didn't get his wheels wrapped with my anchor rode is unbelievable.  Then to give me dirty looks and eyeball us as he goes on his way.  THINGS would have been different on our end if Ian had not been with us.  So Ian probably kept us out of trouble!

Are there rules when it comes to drifing and anchored.  I noticed many times in the rips that some people choose to drift, others choose to anchor, and it becomes a mess.

I would think that should fall under safe lookout. If he was keeping a safe lookout he should have noticed he was drifting towards a boat at anchor.

You can pretty much can anchor anywhere but in a channel. However, common sense should dictate where and when you should anchor.

If you pull into a fleet of boats drifting an area, it would not be prudent to set up on anchor. However, if you are anchored and other boats come into the area, they should not expect you to pull anchor to accomodate them.

Boaters should be aware of their surroundings at all times. And, as Capt Mike said, have a proper watch. Just a point of fact about 'a proper watch'. ALL occupants of the boat can be held responsible if something happens. That is not to say that they WILL be held responsible, but if something happens while underway, you better have a valid reason why you did not see it and take action to avoid it.

Nice Report Last Call, intresting numbers on the catch ratio 2 out of 60, sounds like most of our Fluke season. Makes me wonder what kind of numbers we are going to sea on the sea bass after Sept 7th when everyone will start switching over to wreck fishing.
