6-20 Fluking out of Squan...
« on: August 21, 2008, 10:24:34 AM »
Went north of squan around 1pm, headed to squid tail off the Red Brick Church. Got several 14- 16 inchers, a sand shark, 2 short sea bass, and only one 18 inch keeper. I have become a big fan of gulp, it seems to definately get more action than fresh bait. I use 4 inch sandeels and sometimes the artificial squid. Lost several rigs to the rocky bottom. What do you guys think of braided power pro? I use a spinning reel- I know the pro's and cons of this stuff, but what do you guys think?

Once you use a braided line, fishing with mono line is like fishing with a rubber band.

You feel everything you drag across with braid, whether Power Pro or any other brand.  TT^

I put it on all my reels. Both spinning and conventional. Takes a little getting use to but definitely more sensitive. Good for snagging bunker since there is no stretch.

You said you know the pros and cons but I will tell you this in case someone else reads this.

If you get caught on the bottom don't wrap it around your hand!!!!!! Pull out some slack and wrap it around the reel, point the tip of the pole down and let the drift of the boat pull you free or break the line.

Nice report.. I too fish mostly braid these days.. It may take a little getting used to, but once you do you'll never bo back. In addition to the great sensitivity that Joe describes, it allows you to hold bottom with less weight, and low strecth= better hooksets.

Great report!!  I recently switched my bay and canal rod over to Power Pro from mono.  Best thing I ever did!  I love the braid.  It has some cons, but the pros, for me, definitely surpass the cons.  Eventually my surf reel and my freshwater poles are getting switched over as well!!

I like the green Stren Superbraid. I use a mono leader with it, so if you snag on something the leader breaks and you don't lose much line.

Green Power Pro on all my reels.  Changed over beginning of last year and I will never go back to mono.

If you are casting constantly like I do off the surf don't go out and buy those finger guards they slip off and feel funny to boot.  I switched to Curad flexible fabric band aids.  They are waterproof and will not slip off, in fact I have had to cut them off because they would not slide off my finger.  I use 2 of them and overlap them covering a larger area on the trigger finger.

Good luck.

Happy Catching

I have 30lb power pro on all my fluking outfits. Thanks for the report DJ. A little tip on fishng the rocks DJ when you feel the bottom with your sinker lift the rod tip so your sinker is not on the bottom. Also use a piece of lighter mono like 6lb to tie your sinker to your 3 way swivel or some guys will use rubber bands.  t^

At the price of lead today that could be an expensive trip.

Paul I know I have donated my fare share of lead to the rocks this year, Drew says he wants to go diving up at the Red Church rock pile just to see how much lead is down there.  nosmly

I'm afraid to find out.  The DEP might ban fishing there because of all the lead pollution in that area.   :P

I read a diving article on the Shrewsbury Rocks where the author/diver states that there must be at least thousands of lead fishing weights down there.  I want to ask them why they didn't collect them and bring them up??  Too bad I don't dive or know anyone who does...
