Had Jeremiah Jacobs, NJ Bob aka "double limit" Bob, Brian M, and his buddy Bill Stabile aboard today for a FTYP trip.
Made the run north. Fished some rockpiles, legdges, dropoffs and humps; bucktails all day long with gulp or mini-spro teasers.
Had zero wind or current to start - but we Got off to a great start as we had drop and reel seabass fishing for about a half hour on one piece, most went in the box, big one went about 3#.
Finally got a fluke bite going to the E of where we started, on another rock hump. What began as a slow pick quickly became a somewhat steady pick.. We'd hit a spot, pick a few, go back, do it again. We did this pretty much all day long. By 11 the Easterly breeze kicked in and we got a real nice drift going, .5 - 1.2 knots or so.
I guess around 11 or so we had a bunch of nice fish in the box, topped by NJ Bob's 6# fatties, but Bill's meat stick coupled w/ a beefy Shimano Tekota started screaming drag, Bill immediately knew he had a good fish on, and judging by the bend in his rod, it was obvious he had a GOOD fluke on. When we got it up, I didn't realize how much weight the fish had until I lifted the net. Fish weighed 10.2#, taped out at 29.5" -- a true doormat! 6 oz. bucktail and a pink teaser did the trick - the fish hit the teaser.
Brian wound up w/ his limit, Bob had 5 or 6, as did Jeremiah and Bill, and I even had some time to drop down and pick a nice 6# fish up on one of the new custom rods and a magic bus bucktail.
When all was said and done we finished the day with 25 fluke in the box; a 10.2#, 2 @ 6#, 1 @ 5#, and several 3-4# fish. Most keepers were no doubters. Also had 18 nice seabass in the box as well. A real slammer of a day! Overall we had a load of laughs, caught a ton of fish, and had a GREAT day!
(PICS WILL BE POSTED ON SUNDAY - CAN'T UPLOAD NOW! SORRY GUYS!!)
