Blackfish reel suggestions

I have been using the Jig w/metal spool and 3/o metal spool Penns;they are in excellant shape(rebuild when needed)and do the job fine.
The guys that tog fish more often will make some good suggestions with newer models I'm sure.

I'd just try the Torium IMHO.  I love my OJ that is 5.1:1 as well as my Newells that are the same.  Just reel slow I know a few guys that use trinidads and toriums for tog'n and do well.

The penn should work too.  Throw a little mono backing on and then the braid.

Actually GT, although I originally bought it for jigging, I have already used the Torium for bottom fishing and I love it.  It's nice to be able to crank your line up from 100' at warp speed when its time to check your bait!

I was only thinking about going to my that Penn because Capt. Jerry said a lot of tog are lost by using high speed reels.  I think I'll give the old Penn try the  next time out.  I haven't used it in such a long time.  Its only got a 3:1 gear ratio.  So I'll be doing a lot of cranking! 

But, who knows?  Maybe I'll like it better.  I'm kind of thinking it'll be cool to fish with this old reel again.

Nuting wrong with a high speed reel, its just not necessary for blackfishing. Just got to take it easy if you hook a big fish. It will work fine as long as you dont try to reel 42 inches agaisnt a 12lb tog because something will give usually not the tog.

with 3:1 you wont be doing too much reeling

blackfishing is about the same depth as fluking
for a good chunk of the season. Right now they are biting from 25-70ft

for 100ft or deeper high speed are aces.

If ya like it i wouldnt change it unless you were losing alot of big fish.

Hey Bucktail I have about 8 toriums now, I swear by them. Just have to adjust your speed to the specie. I use these reels from bait fishing to tuna. I originally got this reel for bottom fishing, they have not let me down.

The only gear I really have is for fluking and blackfish.  I make it work for most other things

I have great success with the Calcutta 400 or 700 used in conjunction with the G Loomis M/H or H triggers rods. You'll feel every bite of these cunning fish as they try and suck out that crab bait.

Thats one of my set ups, I also use the old proven jigmaster or a daiwa 47h.

I use the Penn 321LH GT2 and an Ugly Stick for my Blackfish needs.  I have enjoyed it.  Can't wait for blackfish 2009.  We need it.

I'm not an expert, but I am a BIGTIME researcher of equipment. Look into a Shimano Tallus - TLC70MHA rod with a Shimano Tekota 500 reel

I use the Calcutta 400 with my G Loomis trigger rod and I've had excellent success with Blackfish. I've taken fish up to 19 pounds.
I recently purchased an Avet SX 5:3:1 to supplement my Calcutta reel. Does anyone have any experience or comments on this reel ??

I looked at the Avet SX, but the MXL was a better fit for my XH rod. That being said, I went the other way and got the Tekota 600. Haven't tried it yet. I figured rather go too heavy than too light. If I decide to downsize in the future, Capt. Rich showed me a few rods he has in stock that would pair better with the SX or say a Torium 14.
