Tires for the Sand and Road

I am looking to pick up a set of new tires for my truck so I can run out on the beach and have better perfomance then my stock tires.
 I have been looking at Dick Cepek Crushers. Does anyone have any advise on what tire brand to go with? What is a good tire for sand and road?

Any tire that does not have an aggressive tread.  The more aggressive the tread the more it wants to dig in and on the sand you want to ride on top.  I like radials as they have a wider foot print and I take them down to 15 lbs (normal would be 35).

Plus it will give you a better ride on the road than a very aggressive tread less noise to.

I guess bottom line would be the biggest radial in what ever make you want that that will fit your vehicle.

I think that was my problem.  I have a deep tread on my tires, thinking it was going to be better in the sand, it wasn't.

Nitto Terra Grapplers...   Sick Tire... has gotten my friends truck thru Sand at Island Beach ... Deep Mudd in South Jerz... and Mud/Clay in Staten Island...

these tires are a wee bit of change ... but worth it...

Unless you are going to do all that other off road stuff it is a little expensive.  I run just a regular truck radials and have not been stuck yet and I have been going on the beach for more years than most here.

I would rather get a good tire and put the rest into gear that will catch fish and not into something that looks cool.

you're right... but... equipen the truck to be RUGGED is just one of those KOOL things that are usually on the budget...

as a matter of fact... damn... i need an alignment and new tires... damn potholes in Staten Island are killen my truck...

I bottomed out my Lincoln Pickup on a pothole near the Outerbridge Crossing... cracked two rims and my running board...   ok ok... I was speeding... but holy crap... how the hell deep could that mofo been... damn...

I guess I have learned through experience and money spent that what is cool in not always right.  I live about 5 miles from the beach and am on it a few times a week.  I run a 2000 Expedition and it is not tricked out by any means.  Yeah it might be boring to many standards but it gets me from point A to point B without getting stuck.

I have been out in weather you would not want to put a dog into while my many years in Emergency Management volunteering and working for Toms River as their Deputy Coordinator.  If you look at any Police vehicle that goes onto the beach you will not see any tire with an aggressive tread even the trucks used by Parks and Recreation.  If it works for them it will work for me as well.

Don't get me wrong that stuff looks great but if the only off road you will be doing is sand think conservatively.

After searching and searching....

 I have come up with the tire(s) that I want...

I checked out the Nitto Terras and they are ok but Nitto also makes the Dune Grapplers....

Bloody Bad Ass Tires....

Designed for the sand dunes out in Cali...

285 70 17 is the tire I'm going with...

Looking for the best price and as I see it now, $192 per now...

Great looking tire only one question I would ask as I do not know the sand out in California.  Is it good for sugar sand because that is what you will run into here.  Very fine stuff.

BTW did you get the e-mail I sent a few days ago?

yes, i got the email... i have military duty this weekend thru the end of the month... once i get back home, get my gear together, i WILL take you up on your offer....

i read a bunch of articles and none of them defined exactly what type of sand they drove in.
 
 from the little bit that i do know of, the dunes out in new mex, ariz, ect.... are all mixed up...

once the tires are on and the first run on the beach is completed... i will have a FULL report

Anthony, I'm sure the tires you pick and load on your truck  are going to be good.Keep in mind you want any tire to MELT on the sand and NOT dig in,which means to you have to  Air Down.Also keep in mind you want to be able to AIR UP when you come off the beach in a fairly easy way,maybe using a portable compressor if you have access to one.I never wanted to travel toooooo far to a station at 3:00am.
Keeping a balance between road tires and beach tires is a strong idea. GoodLuck, AJ.

Also got my air compressor today, JC Whitney.. 3 minutes to fill a tire..

I believe there is a service station across from Betty & Nick's that has a 24-7 air compressor they provide for the buggies.

there are compressors inside island beach state park... why buy your own compressor... unless you're gonna go get rugged on some forbidden beaches... have fun...

Hey Nick,

There are two areas on IBSP that have multiple air stations.  One is just north of A7 where I think they have about 6 to 8 hoses available and then the Offices for the park located between the two bathing beaches has I think 4 air stations plus water.

OK, so when I get off the beach, just have to drive north to the baithing beach area?

If you get off the beach at A7 turn right and go past the first little parking area and in the second (all within about 100 yards of you exiting) parking area is a series of air stations just look for the big trash bin and you will see them.  and yes if the air stations at A6 are not working or are full of vehicles go up to the offices between the bathing beaches.
