GULP Eels

We all by now know the effectiveness of various GULP products (shrimp, swimming minnow/mullet, sandworm etc.) but I was curious if anyone has tried (successfully) the GULP eels. Saw a package yesterday of the 8" version (black) dead ringer for a 'pencil' eel.

I was in Michael's BnT in Great Kills last week thinking the same thing...

they had the 8in black and they had the brown too... 

I think i'm goin back and given both a go...

now if i do use them... what would be the consensus here on the technique to fish them....

i'm guessing similiar to fluke and give it a lil lively action with a pop or two here an there...

I'd fish them as I would a regular eel. Provided they have some built in action.

see thats the only thing... i dont know how they move in the water without some popping of the pole... i'm gonna have to try it... deadsticking and popping....

Before dropping to the bottom, just observe the action just below the surface.

Dick's has the 8" eels in the juice (Gulp Alive)!

I have had success using other plastic eels,  i.e. the Felmlee type, rigged on a plain old bucktail.  But to give them an incredibly realistic swimming action, rig them on a tin squid.  The motion of the squid wobbling in the water causes the eel to swim with an unbelievably life-like action!

I'd use them on a jighead or as a bucktail trailer like I use the Felmlee's.

Generally, I've never had confidence fishing a lure as if it was bait...but tht's just me.

Tin squids work great in the surf!!  Just had to dismantle the 4 I had.  The eels were way past their prime.  I am going to give the Gulp Eels a try on the tin squids!!

Years and years ago, when I surf fished, we used to use a dacron? line to tie a second hook onto the tin/eel rig. Do you guys still do that?

I did with the last setups!  I probably will when I give them a try again, although the eels I had were 10 or 12 inches...8 inch Gulps might be ok with just 1 hook ?  Kind of a pain to run that trailing hook and line through the eel, but certainly worth it when you hook up more!!

Yeah, I had a rigging needle for that. Made it much easier than any other way (keeping the line to the outside usually meant fouled eel).

Still use the needle to put shads on umbrella rig hooks. Get's the hook back further in the shad than just weaving the hook thru the shad by hand.

seems to me that you could rig these with a Texas rig like you would for fresh water bass and you would get good action bouncing and retrieving them.

I tried rigging some a long time ago, but they never turned out right.  With all the newer stuff out there, I've gotten away from using them.  But when I did fish them I would fish the shorter eels (probably 6" to 10") on just the tin squid, with no stinger.  The longer eels I usually purchased pre-rigged with the stinger.  I remember some had dacron and some were rigged with wire to the stinger.

I probably wouldn't bother rigging a stinger in the 8" eel.  Even a little striper could swallow that whole with no problem.

I have some old tin squids in the garage.  Maybe I'll buy a quart of those Gulp! eels and try them next time out!

I was more interested to see if they would be productive in place of a live eel when drifitng them on a 3x3 rig in the channels in the Sandy Hook/Raritan Bay area.

Yeah Skolmann, try it out.   Probably be a really good test if you do it on a party boat where everyone else has got the real deal and you're dragging the Gulp!
