(CNN) -- A father and son reunited after an international custody battle planned to spend their first holiday season together in five years at Disney World in Florida, a family friend said.

David Goldman and his 9-year-old son, Sean, arrived at Orlando International Airport just after 6 p.m. Thursday after meeting earlier at the U.S. Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Sean Goldman had been living in Brazil since 2004 when his mother, Bruna Bianchi, took him to Rio de Janeiro for what was to have been a two-week vacation. She never returned, instead remarrying there and retaining custody of Sean. She died last year in childbirth.

The Goldmans will spend their first holiday season together in five years at Disney World, a family friend told CNN.

Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, who flew to Rio to support constituent Goldman, called the father-son reunion "extraordinary" in a conference call with reporters.

The lawmaker said "there were lots of smiles, hugs" when the two were reunited. "They talked about basketball, the snowfall in New Jersey just recently and how much fun it is to play in the snow."

Although, I have to amend my statement about the grandmother and family.  Parading him around to exploit their cause.  And then the audacity to make this statement:

Quote
The boy's maternal grandmother, Silvana Bianchi, however, said: "My heart is empty and broken because our love is missing. To take the boy on Christmas Day is a heinous crime."
ASSOCIATED PRESS

The only heinous crime here was her helping abduct that boy away from his father.  She didn't care that Mr Goldman spent the last 5 Christmases without his son...

Now I'm glad the US blocked her from coming here...

OK...enough rant!

He's home and that's all that matters!!

I had a rotten Christmas Eve, now thinking of ending my relationship with my GF of 6 years, but the news that Dave is back in the US with Sean, has eased my pain! This has been a long and difficult journey!
And BTW, I agree, the maternal Grandparent and the Brazilian Step-father and their families deserve no empathy whatsoever!
The outcome has been a bright spot in my otherwise dreary holiday season!
I wish Capt. Dave and all of you on the NJ Saltwater fishermen forum, the very best in the coming new year!
One day I'll have a photo of me and my 1st Striper up instead of this cat.

irenegade, keep your chin up. Sometimes these things with the other half are just not meant to be. Better to find out now then when it is too late. Perhaps things will mend between you and your girlfriend but if they don't, you will find another. As you saw, things finally worked out for Dave and Sean. Things will work for you also.

As far as sympathy for the Brazilian family...these people brought this on themselves. They had no sympathy for Dave or Sean when they deprived them of five years of companionship.

The best to you. I hope you have a great year ahead of you.  chrz

Thanks Capt. Joe for your words of support!
And Rod for posting the update.  I can't believe how much national press this has been getting.  Where were they early on?
Anyway, I seem to recall one report saying Capt. Dave brought Sean to Disneyworld!
I know this New Year will bring much joy to them, and I hope the same to everyone on NJSWF!
See you guys on the shore soon! (I get motion sickness)

At this point I don't think it would matter one bit what the Brazilian court rules. The US court ruled that custody was given to David Goldman years ago. That is all that would be needed to keep him in this country.

That, along with the fact the a nine year old has no say in who should have custody of him/her, should be enough to end this nonsense with the Brazilian family.
