Damn Dave... My hands are sweatin' & I wasn't even there!  I'm not sure I've ever encountered them as bad as you described but I do know what you're talkin' about. Conditions like that can certainly scare the crap outta ya!! Glad you made it back safely!
Good advice on the float plan. Don't leave home without one!!

Bass Time In The Back Country

We have just had some very cold weather move into the Northeast this week.... Night time temps are into the teens....

The back country which I call the west side of the bay... Has some of the best late season bass fishing you could ever ask for....

The bait fish that have spent all summer and fall in some of the marsh areas are on the move.... The night time freeze has started this push of bait and the bass are starting to feed heavy.... I put some pics of the areas I'm talking about....

The entire west side has miles of good marsh that hold all kind of bait fish... If you can get to these areas on the out going tide the bass should be there waiting to hit what ever come out....... Work all the little out flows you can find....

Its going to be cold and wet... So be sure to dress for the weather and the water.

Dont worry to much about what your throwing at them... I like to mix up the size... before color... Just becasue your not fishing the beach or jetty... Sure does not mean you cant throw that big yellow swimmer.... Opps

I had the chance to get out over the holiday weekend.... I sure wish this was going to be a better report, but its not.

I fished the back bay hard with a friend the entire week.... We worked all the areas that should hold good fish at this time of year and didn't find anything....

The bait was gone.... I didn't read any bait or fish for hours....4 days of fishing... not a hit,bump,splash....NOTHING

I cant understand how that much bait moved out that fast.... we had some cold weather... but to not find something is just so odd...

Sorry for the bad news.... I will continue the hunt next Friday.

I'm not sure how much longer I can keep going out with the temperatures as low as we have been having.... While out last week both the wind and ice make fishing difficult.

The kayak seems to get ice built up fast from the water splashing over the side...But again I will get out and give it my best shot like always.

I did get fish on Sunday in Ocean Beach just north of Lavallette on metal... YES.. I did fish the surf to over the long weekend... all small fish... Its like work fish from the kayak in the dark... go home and sleep for couple hours.... Then run back to the beach and fish more....

Its not over just yet...

I was talking to a good friend of mine over the weekend who told me the bay still had some fish.... I dint take the kayak out... But stop by one street end.

I thought for sure he was just pulling my leg.... by my third cast I felt a good hit... Then fish on.... They are sure bigger then the fish in the surf....

Is that where we talked about?  I heard that they were getting some nice bass right below the bridges as well.

It is amazing that they are in there so long.  I guess the p-nuts or some bait in a large quantity are still there as well.

I know that there are a number that winter over but the numbers I am hearing seems to large.  I guess we will see next year.

That reminds me I have to get over to IBSP for my buggie pass.  :P

I might give it a try as well.  You never think to fish the bay in the fall into winter.  Thanks for the info!!
