Not to be a downer but be careful with this...giving any personally identifiable information could lead to identity theft...

That website just searches state databases.  You can go directly to the www.nj.gov and it will take you there.  Most of the money looks like it is administered by the State Treasurers so...it is a little safer!

The website itself may be safe but I'd research the person or company that reported it thoroughly before giving any information or actually going through with anything...

This is a valid thing. I don't know about this particular web site, but the government runs one also.

I believe this is the federal government site.

http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/Money_Owed.shtml

I know people who found they were owed money and received it. It does take a while, with all the paperwork and such.

All done for free also. If some one wants to charge a fee for this service, find the government site.

Most of these monies are from old insurance policies, mortgage insurance, small bank accounts, etc. When the funds are unclaimed for a certain period of time, the businesses are obligated to turn the money over to the governement to locate the owner of the funds. That is how it was explained to me anyway.

Good luck in your search. And remember, have it done for free.  t^

I agree...it is always better to be safe...than sorry later!

I had heard about this before on a news show, but never looked anything up.  The way Capt Joe explains it, is exactly how the news show did.

Have used that site before, it is safe, father in law passed in 2000. There was a bank account from an old buisness that was claimed
by the estate not a very large sum but still family collected it. Lots of times these monies
are utility deposits, phone deposits not claimed after people move.

I still wouldn't give out any info to anyone without verifification at least that the business exists.

Maybe I'm paranoid but I work for a large accounting firm in IT. It's not that hard to crack an unsecured server and Gov't agencies are notorious for being behind in technology.

I'm required to take 40 hours of data security training every year for my job and I'd recomend to anyone that plugging your your name and information into a website should not be taken lightly...

If I found something I'd send any inquiries via certified mail and get everything notarized if it was a decent amout of money.

BnB, if I am not mistaken, I think you send in a hard copy with your info in it for this. The info part is not done over the internet.

And you are absolutely correct. Do not send you info over the net for something like this. There are many scams out there.

Good for you Rod. I searched and found my deceased mother's maiden name. I requested info on it and it took almost 10 weeks but it seemed to be from some insurance co. in the amount of 358.00 dollars. I need to send in a copy of the death certificate to have the money sent to me now.
the site is legit and was on various news shows from time to time.
