12.2 pound Slob-Tog
« on: December 07, 2008, 10:46:24 AM »
With the onset of my own marine business this year I committed myself to my customers, leaving very little time to fish.  However on Dec 4th I was able to sneak away with my good friend Mark for a well deserved tog trip. And what a trip it was. AM air temps were in the low 30’s forcing me to put a heater in the pilothouse to defrost the windows. Once underway and out into Great Bay it was warming up and wind was none existent. Averaging 24 mph we hit LEI in no time. The ocean was flat calm.  We motored out to GSN and began the hunt. With Marks precise maneuvering at the helm, he positioned the boat exactly how he wanted it over the structure. Great job Mark!!  We started dropping greenies between 10:30 and 11:00. And bailing tog we did. I had the first keeper, I think, and I usually have a hard time hooking these white chins.  Tog after tog were being swung aboard. Way beyond “keeper” size. When we would get a lull in the fishing or we started getting small fish, I would drop back on the anchor.  More nice fish.  Mark kept saying “I know there’s a big one down there somewhere”. And then he nailed it!  It’s a big one he yells out.  Get the net.  His rod damn near doubled over, I see the fish nearing the top. The net goes in the water and he guides the fish into it. And OUT the FISH goes of the OTHER SIDE of the NET, still hooked. We scramble and do get the fish aboard. WOW!! What a slob.
At this time the SW wind had picked up and the seas were building so I knew it was going to be a slow ride in. With our limit on board we headed back to my dock arriving near dark. Here are the pics.
Thanks Mark. Always a productive trip when wreck fishin with ya and a great congratulations on that
12.2 LB tog.  Capt. Matt.

Thanks, it sure does. That fished measured 25 1/2 in.  In the 4th pic down on Matt's post I'm holding a 15 in. next to it.
