Asbury Park Press Fired John Geiser
« on: December 19, 2008, 08:49:11 AM »
For those who have not heard, the Asbury Park Press fired John Geiser. John has been a mainstay of the Fishing Community for decades, and always wrote a fair article telling the good as well as bad.

The paper refued to allow John to write a goodbye column.

A ground swell has started amoung the Party/Charter Boats cancelling their Ad's.

I know I for one will no longer purchase the paper, nor will I advertise in it.

First Al Ristori with the Ledger and now John. Who is trying to hide/silence what?

This is a large blow to our sport.

o@  I'm sure we're all wondering the same thing.  Why? 5hrug  Hopefully his side of the story will surface on one of the boards.

That's one heck of a Christmas present.  "Thanks for 30 some odd years of great columns and fishing reports.  Now get out!"  nosmly

Today's article was probably written several days ago.

As far as him getting fired, welcome to the American way. Do all you can for the company and then get put out to pasture. Pathetic way to do business and way too many businesses doing this.  nosmly  >:(

I just noticed that all the comments that were linked to John's column have been removed.

While not being nasty, they all slammed the press for firing him and staed that supscriptions and ads would be canceled.......

Guess they want us to shut up also

This was posted on the Big Mohawks website, I for one will make the call and voice my opinion......

Today the fishing industry has taken a serious blow. John Geiser, author of the Hook, Line, and Sinker column in the Asbury Park Press was laid off today due to a quote unquote budget cut.

He has been an icon and has represented anglers up and down the Atlantic Coast for over 45 years. John Geiser has dedicated his entire life and writings to properly representing the average angler in today’s world of changing restrictions and regulations.

Because of this, I for one will no longer purchase or advertise in The Asbury Park Press. His column is one of the most widely read columns in the paper and as you may be aware had a vast advertising section every Friday.

This does not make much sense to me because I know for a fact that this section brought in tons of revenue for the Press and as a result they will ultimately gross a lot less money by not having the column.

I have spoken to several fellow captains in my industry and we have all decided to take our advertising elsewhere.

If you feel as strongly as I do about getting John Geiser reinstated please take a stand. This is a man that neither The Asbury Park Press or the recreational fishing industry cannot afford to lose.

To express your concerns please call Gary Sheoning, the editor of The Asbury Park Press at 732.643.4020

This is a call that you can't afford not to make.

Being that I am not local to the area I did not subscribe to the APP, had no reason to. However, I did make it a point to pick up the APP every Friday for the sole purpose of reading the Hook, Line and Sinker. That was worth the price of admission in and of itself.

Now that John Geiser is no longer with the newspaper the Hook, Line and Sinker will not be what it was, if it to remain at all. I will not be buying the Friday edition of the APP anymore.

It is sad to see the fishing community and its support slowing slipping into oblivion.  :'(

John's articles were a main reason for my buying and reading the Press. Alway enjoyed them, as they were on point and had our interest at priority.Sorry to see the Press fired him.
I will have to fire the Press starting today.

John's article was still in this past Friday's APP. If he was fired, would they give him several weeks to continue working there?

Something is strange with that.  5hrug

I guess the guys at the paper don't like what they dish out.  I will keep writing e-mails and see what happens.  Maybe we should sent fax's as well and really load up their in box...

Weather you like John or not that is not the point anymore it is the principal.  I buy the paper for one thing and that is to read the sports section and for me I enjoyed John's work.  Now we have no reason to get the paper especially when most of the news you read is outdated any way.

Maybe someone should send this link to the editor? Let them see for themselves the business they are going to loose!! I am sure they ads alone that he brought in more than paid his way.
