NJ Cod/Pollock 2/24
« on: February 25, 2011, 11:06:20 AM »
Took advantage of the nice weather yesterday to jump on the Gambler out of Pt. Pleasant for their 12 hour trip to the mid-shore grounds.. I was joined by a few C/O buddys who drove down to meet me @ 0500 after working their 2-10 shift at the prison.. psychcos!  ..  ;D  while I had'nt been out with them in a while, I was'nt surprised to find capt. Bob and crew are still running one of the hardest working, slickest run boats on the shore. Despite all their hard work, and countless moves/wiggles to get a consistent bite to develop,  it was a slow pick all day.. But after the first couple stops, some quality fish started to make up for a lack of quantity. Most fares had 2-4 keeper Codfish but some very nice specimens to about 25# where brought aboard.. I only had 2 keeps ,  but was fortunate enough to yoke a fat Pollock with the new "snake" rod, which has now been properly christened with blood and clam snot.. ;D  And I'm pleased to report that the Seeker supertog blank is bad to the bone..lots of smooth power, sensitive, and bounces up to 14oz sweet.. can't wait to use it on for tog.. My Pollock was beaten out of the pool by another of about  30#  cfzd  but  in all it was a sweeet way to spend a winters day!  chrz

Jeff's nice Bacala:

Can i ask, what are the best jigs to take along on a  cod fish trip?

A variety of jigs will take cod/pollack. Most times you'll need jigs of 8oz or more. Take what you have. Hammered diamonds, diamonds, norway jigs, butterfly, they all take fish at times. A teaser 2 foot above the jig makes the rig complete. Most trips 90+% of the fish have been taken on bait. Some guys just like to jig a little cause a big fish is many times taken this way. There are lots of herring around but when examining the contents of my cod's stomach from a recent trip all I found was clam. Good luck ;D
