Title: Delta Kayaks!
Post by: SeaFlea on March 11, 2010, 12:42:09 PM
I just found the company/site a couple weeks ago.
Two things interest me:
(1) their boats are thermoformed, not rotomolded, which means their boats are light
(2) they plan on producing a SOT catamaran:

If I get any more information on it I'll let ya know.
One other thing - they are looking for dealers; I believe there are only two or three in the US.

Looks like a pretty cool design.  The only thing I wonder how much effort it will take to turn it since it has 2 hulls.  Tracking should be pretty good as the 2 hulls, if straight, should help with that.

Its suposed to be very fast and turns on a dime with no rudder needed. Acrylic is very stiff also which is a huge advantage over Polyethelene. We have them on order and they should be in the shop in mid April. I am going to attempt to alter one to acept the Hobie Mirage drive. At 49 pounds it wheighs 1/2 of a Pro Angler.

That would be interesting to see...hope it works!

This kayak is being highly anticipated on the net.  I just did a search and came up with 1000's of links discussing it.  Looks pretty neat!

Yes its alot but thats what state of the art construction cost. The seat is awsome and included as well as the hatches. If you could get a few hundred off the price would not be much higher then many of the top of the line rotomolded plastic boats which wheigh a ton, flex and twist and deform in the hot sun. This is not the trash can construction we all have been using for years. Ive heard nothing but great things about Delta and their dedication to perfection. There is alot planned for the future that I cant talk about at this time. Lets just say that in two or three years they may have the most desirable line of kayaks on the planet.

A price tag of of $1450 for the Catfish is about $450 more than a Hurricane P13 (the P130 weighs in at 46#) and about $400 more than a Hurricane P140 (the P140 weighs in at 52#). Hurricanes kayaks are also thermoformed, not rotomolded.
All I'm sayin' is: it's an awfully large chunk of change to drop on a fishing kayak that hasn't been fished yet!

Sounds like I would wait for the jury to come in on it, before dropping that much cash. I should talk, spent close to $1100.00 on my canoe for freshwater. cfzd

The construction is not the same. Huricane has had continous problems with their seam. They have no usable hatches and they are not catamarans. The hurricanes also do not come with seats. The seat on the Delta is suposed to be extremly comfy and revolutionary in design. The catfish is twice the kayak.
I would have never imagined ,me using a catamaran two years ago. But one year spent on the Pro-Angler taught me that single hulls are not ideal for the way I fish at night. Cat hulls are 10 times as stable, roomier, easier to rig, track better, dont need rudders, and are faster then the same size single hulls. Its the way of the future. As soon as I laid eyes on the picture of the Catfish I had to get my hands on some.

They have arrived. The most revolutionary thing to happen in kayaks since the hobie mirage drive.
Sorry, I have a bunch of pics but cant figure atachments out here.

It doesnt look like a mirage drive would work because the cat hull creates a big airpocket under the center of the yak. Even with turbos only half the flipper would reach the water. There is a clear window that could be removed and I have sets of click and go locks. But it doesnt look doable.

Can you say electric trolling motor???

I know I know you have to get all that state stuff outa da way.

But it looks like it would not take much to push her along.

Ok, I finaly got a chance to paddle this bad boy today. It was fast and it was reluctant to turn. I got up to 5.4 mph every time afterabout five strokes. It acelerated fast and maintained its glide unbelievably even if I skipped a stroke. I havent paddled much in 12 years so Im going to put more practice in on it and maybe tuffen up my man boobs.
Turning there was some resistance. I had to lift one butt cheek or drag the blade to turn quikly.
Standing it was as stable as my Pro Angler and easier to get back in the seat. I felt with practice I could paddle all day with a single blade standup paddle. This may prove to be this yaks most unique attribute.
I sat side saddle and pushed it as hard as I could the photographer said I got one pontoon clear of the water without going over.
I did wheigh it as it carries a lot lighter then 48 pounds but the scale read 48 right on the money. No help needed to lift this thing by yourself on to a high SUV.
It paddled into the wind which was about 15 knots with no loss of speed or glide. I think the concave tunnel might actualy create lift. Notice very little disturbance or wake coming off the bow in the pic below.
Im 200 pounds and the yak drew more water then I was excpecting about six inches.
Footbraces felt rock solid with no flex at all no matter hard I tried. Hardware looks to be all stainless.
The paddle lash was also rock solid I could barely move it once locked in.
Overall the only yak in its class I can compare it to are the Hurricanes I used to sell. It tracked much better and the stability isnt even comparable. With practice I think I can polka on the catfish. I never GPS'ed a Hurricane so I cant compare speed but 5.4 MPH without paddling the last decade suprised me. I used a 240cm full carbon Werner.
