Avet SX.  Love tha thing!  They had problems with early production run reels from what I hear.  2 schools of thought on the company - love em or hate em, no in between.
Got mine 2 yrs ago and it has been a flawless workhorse.  The lever drag takes a little getting used to if you arent familiar with it. Other than that, I cant say enough about the reel. Worth the $$$$.  Want to get 2 more this winter, another SX and a larger LX.

Avet sx and mxl the lever drag is great and you cant over tighten it (max drag I think is 14lbs)  which makes it great for beginners

Wow, I am surprised on this one.

I own a few Okuma spinning reels (which are so-so) and have used Titus Gold 50w's and several other Okumas that my father had owned (and have witness other using several other conventional models)and I will say I will never touch another okuma product (aside from the fishing rod rack) again.

I am def leaning toward the Avet, but have to try one before I plunk down that kind of green. I am going to try my pops trinidad which I am sure I wil llike, but won't even be able to justify it's price (hard enough time with an Avet).

I guess when I take Duffman out for stripers in May, I will check out his Avet :)

I know that wasn't a veiled attempt at calling me a beginner :)

If you like the Trinidad but not the price tag, take a look at the Torium.  It's a pretty nice reel for the money.  Similar in design to the Trinidad.  They retail around $170-$200 depending on the size.  For your needs the 20 or 30 might be a good choice.

I have the 16 size for  my jigging stick and it is awesome!  Smooth as butter.  It has a 6.2:1 super fast retrieve, but with a surprising amount of power as well. ;D

We all have our favorites, just like in cars, etc.

I have 2 of the Torium 30's great reels.
I also have 2 TLD 25's, I think for live lining using the lever drag this is a better option for the price. This is a descent all around reel.

I have the Torium 20.  That would be an ideal real for your needs.  I have the Torium 16 on order, as I like its size.  A bit smaller that the 20 but still a work horse.   t^

I have a penn international 965, its a baitcasting, conventional, levelwind.. Made in USA!. Its pricey though around $225.00 It should last a lifetime if maintained right. Im still using some 20 and 30 year old penns and Ocean City Reels.    Maintenance is key...  I also use 7' Ugly, Tiger sticks. I have all different weight classes.  chrz

Hunter,
Check that Penn, it may be made in China now.  I just picked up a Penn Slammer Live Liner.  Made in China!   5hrug

I believe the company was recently sold.

Just an FYI for anyone who buys only American made products.

I actually have a Charter special LD that I use now which I like a lot.

My pops uses the TLD 15's on 20lb class rods to troll shad rigs and Stretch plugs which is also very nice.

I may check out the Torium as well.  Those Avets are looking mighty nice tho, but a bit out of my range now :(

PENN Reels was sold recently, Although not all reels are made overseas yet. I'm sure the quality will go down when all production is moved to China, Its a shame that we moving production of so many products to foreign land. 5hrug

I have have had bad luck with the 965's and 975's. My father always takes excellent care of his gear (has reel covers for each reel)and they all had issues multiple times. Believe he sold them off. I have had a lot of trouble with Penn over the years and will not purchase any more (unl;ess I get a GREAT deal on a used one in good condition that would be worth while).
