Title: Gas Prices
Post by: Captain Dave Wittenborn on December 27, 2007, 11:50:33 AM
For your information
Captain Dave

Gas could be $3.75 a gallon by spring-Diesel $4.00

New York Times

December 27, 2007

Gasoline could average $3.75 a gallon across the U.S. in a few months and diesel will be over the $4 mark, energy analysts said Wednesday.

Several factors point toward a nightmarish spring for motorists, they said, including persistently strong crude oil costs and the fact that the traditional December drop in pump prices didn't materialize.

"If anyone expects gas or diesel to be less than a new record, they are not thinking," said Fadel Gheit, senior energy analyst for Oppenheimer & Co. "There is no question it will be much higher than last year."

"I don't think we will see a typical spring surge, and we don't have to," Fadel said. "This spring you're going to see about 75 cents a gallon more from where they are now."

What sucks is marine fuel is .50-.75 more per gallon then auto fuel.

Its our own fault, no one wants wells off Florida or Natural gas well off NJ or wind powered generators, so I guess we will stay dependent on foreign countries to yank our chain.

Not to mention there hasn't been a new refinery built for decades and no one wants to rely on nuclear so I guess higher prices are inevitable.

Sorry, my bp goes up when this subject is brought up.

Diesel fuel was always cheaper then Regular gas, now its the most expensive.  If oil prices rises a certain percentage, should all grades of gas rise equally.  If so, even though the gas prices rise, diesel should still be cheaper then the rest...  I have a diesel F350 and a Excursion..  The diesel gets better gas milage then the excursion, but the gas for the excursion is $.60 cheaper, so it all equals out.  There is no way around this problem.

This subject really get me going too.

Our dependence on a non-renewable, poluting energy source that we buy from foriegn countries who only want us dead is so foolish...oh, don't get me started. bngh

It makes me worry about the future of our country. :-\

Seems that everyone wants to complain about the price of oil/gasoline.  If the prices weren't what they are the oil companies wouldn't be able to make their record profits every year.  Cut them a break! (he said in the most sarcastic voice he could muster up)

And I won't even mention that the president's family has been in the oil business for years.

I have to admit, I voted for George Bush. I did it knowing that any President who favors oil brings down our economy.  It may take some time, but it happens.  George Sr. did the same thing.  So why did I vote for him?  I guess in hindsight, I am a real jacka$$.  I forgot to mention, President Bush was supposed to be the education president.  So why are mortgages cheaper to obtain than school loans.  You can get a 30 year fixed mortgage for less than 7%.  A school loan............can be had for 8 to 9%.  I am sure getting an education.

Actually, mortgage rate as low as 5.5 %, not to add salt to the wound.

The problem is, like anything else, once you lose it, it takes forever to get it back.. if at all..

fight for things we don't have, instead, now we have to fight for things we used to have.

George Bush or any President for that matter has NO control over the price of oil (which is determined on the open market and is set by supply, demand, OPEC collusion, market fear and specultors (whether covering short positions or going long on all the contracts.

george Bush also has ZERO effect on long term mortgage rates (and the FED has nothing to do with them either). That is controlled by the treasury markets (10 yr note affetcs 30 year mortgage etc)

mboy,

Let's talk real world.  Policy makers make policy.  The direction that the US takes in a global economy is a direct result.  China didn't just happen overnight.  India's economic growth isn't any secret.  Policy impacts the markets.  Just ask Alan Greenspan.

It's also no secret that our immigration policies protect Corporate America.........otherwise the average Joe would be making more money.  George Bush has done very little to stop illegal immigration. Why?

Why were tax laws passed early on in the Bush Administration providing incentives to purchase vehicles over 6000 lbs. knowing full well that these vehcicles average less than 12 mpg?  Not long after gas prices rose over $3 per gallon.  Now Mr Bush says we are addicted to oil and wants SUV's that get over 35 mpg.  Who benefits from these laws?  Surely not the Amercan people.

Irishayes, I am in agreement with you on this.

According to AA roadwatch a liter of regular unleaded is 1.12 Euro or  $1.60 per liter....comes to more than $6.00 per gallon...in any event, I don't think the Baltic has much to offer other than herring.  I'll stick to the waters off of NJ.

Bush the education president? When is he going to get educated? Couldnt resist that.

We were warned back in the 70's what could happen when dependent on other countries. Here we are 30 years later in the same situation. We need a president who will demand reducing imports 10% a year. It can be done wind farms, solar, even the tides can be used. Then we have the enviroment people. No matter what source they are negative about it. Wind generator farms. They complained it would bother the birds. I think they would adjust. Brazil was able to do away with imports why cant we??

  Low mortages?
sure give loans out to people without a background check. What the hell! No wonder there are so many foreclosures. What happened to the times when 1 weeks pay had to cover your loan then the go to 30% or more. The worse is yet to come. Credit card dept is skyrocketing. People are behind on the payments. Another blow. Dollar is loosing value as we speak. Part of the reason for oil prices by the way. Have we ever had a president that has done so much damage?

Frank
PS I rant and rave but I see whats happening!!

Irishayes, I am in agreement with you on this.

Obviously you have an Anti bush agenda.

How does HIS immigration policy benefit corporate america? Most ilegals do not work in "Corporate America".

They work on farms, doing manual labor, etc.

I am all for locking the borders down, but don't tell me avg Joe would be making more $$$ if it were not for illegal aliens.
You think those illegals are taking all those $50 hr jobs  5hrug

Tax incentives on decent sized trucks (when all taxes were cut across the board for the most part) are responsible for gas going to $3 and it Is Geroge Bush's fault

China and India's booming economies, hence increased oil demand is also Bush or any other president's doing?

You say Bush is bad for the incentives on 12mpg vehicles and he benefited from that by rising oil prices.

Then you say he wants SUV economy raised to 35mpg and he will benefit from it?

Which is it? Does he benefit from vehicles with worse fuel economy or does he benefit from cars with better fuel economy? You can't have it both ways.

I am no Bush fan or supporter, but your agenda seems clear.

Bus was responsible for 911 too right?

hell, I think he even had a part in the anchor line getting wrapped in the prop on my trip yesterday.

I am sorry mgm.  You are correct.  This is a fishing website.  Having said that, I just can't help myself - yes, this will be my last comment on the subject.

Forget gas prices, just take a long drive on that "foreign owned turnpike" to get to the fishing grounds.  It's already happened in some states.  New Jersey and PA aren't that far behind.  Doesn't that turnpike belong to us?  Didn't we pay for it?

MGM, like you said, it's a fishing web site so I'll keep all my other concerns quiet.  Just hope my children and their children have a place to call home.

What this country urgently needs (again IMHO) is a strong 3rd party.

Oh yea forgot to add that I have a very bad feeling that buy Memorial Day we'll be close if not at $4/gallon for roadside gas...can only imagine what dockside fuel will cost.

Speaking for myself, that would make a drastic change in how I fish. I definitely would not drive as far to get to a boat and would probably limit myself to just 1 day over the weekend to fish (of course I might just have to double up on the trips for that 1 day  ;D)

I

Very true. It can never happen is our present system though. You need the backing and support of one of the partys to get anywhere.

It's unfortunate that if you want a stong military and small government you have to put up with corporate greed and religious fanatics but if you want fair trade and protection of the the middle class you have to put up with weak law enforcement and an semi-socialism.

I've become very interested in following politics the past few years and I get more scared every day...

Tank up early!!! Once vacation season starts gas prices will climb. These prices are fabricated. We have had a very mild winter. Which usually results in lower home heating prices but not this year. I also believe that the price per barrel close to 100 is to put more money into Iraq hands. If I recall I think they pump 2 million barrels a day. At 30, alot of money at 100 ALOT more money.

Gas prices are simple economics. Supply and demand. When you have AlGore running around saying the sky is falling all because of my suv, then all the sheep run out and get econoboxes. The oil company will do what they do to stay in business, which is raise prices. On top of that, all the corn that goes toward ethanol, instead of my cereal, is raising the price of food. It cant be grown fast enough. Taxes and entitlements are whats killing us, not the products that I use and enjoy, like my suv.

Well, driving small cars uses less oil, therefore supplies theoretically should increase and demand decrease, leading to lower prices.  The rest I agree with.  Ethanol is less efficient and has no practical purpose but to make farmers in the middle of nowhere wealthy.  Not saying I'm against farmers, but if you have to invent new, pointless ways to use your product, perhaps your product's time has passed.  If we really wanted to use ethanol in terms of saving fossil fuels, we'd import it from Brazil.  But when Iowa apparently holds so much political power, that's not a popular move.

I doubt any of the candidates running have the power to reduce oil prices.  However, many of them have the power (and the desire) to raise taxes.  That's what I'll be considering in November.

There we agree 100%.  Obviously, if supplies to India and China were back down to the levels of 10 years ago, there would be a major difference, but prices are so inflated by speculation that a bubble of gigantic proportions has formed in the energy sector.  Whether it will burst or if it will continue is the next question.  There are cases to be made for both outcomes.  One will result in prices in the $1.50 range while the other will result in fuel being sold for $4.50 regularly.

Either way, we as a country should be focusing tons of resources on finding a viable alternative fuel for combustion engines.  There is no excuse not to be doing this right now.

also when i get pissed at gas prices i remind myself of wht a comedian once said

::::for $2.90 someone will pump 1 gallon of oil from the hot dessert, then ship it to the USA then some one else will convert it into gas, then ship it to a gas station, then someone else will put it in our car for us, now compare that to someone charging $1.69 for  16 ounce bottle of tap water::::

so when i think of that i smile take a sip of my bottled water start my big gs guzzling V8 truck and drive off towards the sea to go fishing in a gas guzzling boat...

Corn is rapidly becomming an alternative fuel source and corn prices are rising, but here is the delima . . .

I don't know the terminology, but the government pays farmers NOT to use all of their land, thus raising the prices of the farm products, however, with the prices of corn going drastically up, a lot of the farmers are not going to re-new their agreements with the government to not farm a certain percent of their land.  The farmers will now be making more money to utilize all of their land.  This will help to make the US more self sufficient in the future, but it will take away important habitat needed by the wildlife to survive.

So, a catch 22 as usual.  Utilize all of our farmland and loose a lot of wildlife and hunting areas.  I know it should be an easy decision, but there's a lot more to it than the simple way I have explained it.

The comarison of gas to milk, soda etc is invalid.

An aveage family uses about a gallon of milk per week vs. 20 or 30 gallons of gas. All of these other items are manufactured. We don't have to depend on other countries who hate us to produce these items.

Gas/Oil effects every part of our lives and security. All goods have to be moved somehow, houses and warehouses have to be heated and we have to get ourselves to work. Tanks and warplanes need it too.

I don't think money will be our un-doing rather oil will if we don't do something about it. We almost lost WW II because of it and we haven't learned our lesson.

Sorry about my ranting on this subject but I feel it's a very important issue. All the media seems to care about is Brittney Spears and Lindsley Lohan...

Unfortunately, you are correct about this.  But the media will put out what the people want.  It's screwed up how these people want and crave these kind of news reports?  I couldn't care less about Spears or Lohan, or any other so called celebrities for that matter.
