Want to have something done for my son for his 6th B-day in March. I have something in mind, I just need to talk to a builder. A basic 6' 6" all around baitcaster stick with a certain theme I know he will love.
Any info you all can pass on is much appreciated. If I can get this to happen the way I picture it, it should be pretty cool. Thanks

Try Grupmy's Bait & Tackle in Seaside. I've seen some fantastic custom rods come from his shop. t^ <'((((><

Kevin Bogan makes a nice rod.
I have 1 of his and my son does as well

Where are you located?

nice , but how uch do you save per rod , making them your self?
-
Bob, I'm in Aberdeen.
Only place I knew of was Bogans.
Thanks for the input, keep em coming...
What ever happened to Robs???
-
Hi Duffman,
Mike at Grumpys makes some excellent rods as does Kevin Bogan. I would run it by both and I am sure that you will know just by the vibes you receive by talking to each man.
I know you want this to be special for your son as I did when I made my daughters rod. Hers was nothing fancy but it was the thought process and the love one puts into it that counts and makes it special.
Good luck in your quest.
Happy Catching

There are custom rods and then truly custom, one of a kind, made specificaly for the individual rods ;)
xlrods@yahoo.com
Works out of SI NY.
Rods look fantastic, but that's just the icing on the cake. Rod is built for you to specific individual characteristics and requirements.
Ain't a "just pick your colors and we'll wrap you a custom rod" rod >:D
-
Hey Gottog, welcome back from your trip. I hope is was a good one.
Good info on the rods. t^

Trip was ok. Lots of work and long days. Yet another trip that makes me feel like I've still never really "visited" Vegas 5hrug
Busy at work catching up and getting new items placed. Busy, which is a good thing ;D TT^ chrz
I do NEED to go fishing soon. bngh

What's Billy's turn around time running these days?
My guess 1 year +.
-
Actually much much quicker that that when he's in actual rod building mode.
-
I am not sure Duffman is looking to spend $400 on a rod for his 6 year old :)
-
You get what you pay for grtn
Even if you calculated minimum wage for the hours he spends on just some of the wraps, you're still getting a deal.
He's made some sweet rods for a few kids, including his own. He had a Bart Simson one that was just incredible.

those are some nice rods. do you know about how much they cost?
-
Hold on to your knickers for this one.
-
Depends on blank, components, wraps, etc. Gotta ask the builder for exact prices.
Can get cheaper "customs" built at other places, but you're limited in what you can actually get.

Although it looks like a fun party, I'm not sure I get the connection between custom rod building and this video. Can you fill me in? 5hrug

Went out on a tangent from IrishAyes asking about my trip, my bad. chrz
I'll tell you, I've fished cheap factory rods and high end factory rods. There is ZERO comparison to a good custom stick.
I even have a Lami factory rod and a custom built on the same blank...night and day between the two in action, feel, etc.

Danny Rydel ... he is in Manasquan.. writes for the Fisherman Magazine... Worked in Kevin Bogan's sweatshop for many years... does a real nice job and he is easy on the pockets...
Don;t know if I can post it here so drop me a email if you would like his number...
-
second that bobber danny makes nice sticks as well as keven bogans....... but
gottog owns the nicest customs around ;D think his buddy billy or nerb builds them.

I just got am email from Tom McNamara the owner of the Mud Hole in Fla. I emailed the company asking if the original owner Mike Trallee(?) was still the owner and if he remembered the old shop in Brick and Toms River. I helped set up the one in Toms River. Well he is not the owner any more but it seems like they might be interested in putting a location here in T.R. if things add up. He wants me to call him if I can help him set this up.
Don't know if it will happen but it would be interesting having a good distributer in the area with decent pricing for rod building.
Happy Catching

Paul,
We used to have a "Mud Hole" tackle shop here in Forked River. I guess he left the area more than 10 or so years ago. It was a small shop. I don't remember the guy's name. I didn't go in there all that much since I don't do the offshore thing. But I would stop in and buy some lure making stuff once in a while.
The guy who owned was kind of tall with a mustache. I see there is a Mudhole custom tackle website now. I always wonder if that's the same guy. Is the guy you're talking about the same guy I'm talking about?
-
Yep, same guy. That was Mike. From Forked River he moved to Fla. and I guess he sold the business after a while.
He used to make a mean offshore rod especially for those who like to shark fish. There was a rep from Diawa who got all his rods made from Mike. I remember his first name was Bob and for the life of me I can't remember his last. But, yes sir-re that was a fun time.
