Title: GPS help...
Post by: Sam3 on January 29, 2008, 12:40:59 PM
I bought a used Garmin 185C sounder and I'm looking to get a chip for it that covers from Sandy Hook down to Manasquan, any idea's where to begin looking?

 Have you tried Garmin?

It's a discontinued model number. I think from 1999. I can look..
I didn't know if there was a generic chip you can use or if it has to be a Garmin.

It has to be a brand/type the unit supports. Navionics,C-map, bluenav, etc.

Well...the unit had a Garmin Navionics MGUS241SS (Offshore Rumson-Atlantic City) chip in it. I'm not going to need that.

Now the search to find a chip for more northern waters.

Look for the Garmin Navioncs chip that covers the area you want. Start with Ebay for used (and to sell the one you don't need).

Thanks, but I'm going to put a hard top on it at some point. Internal antenna won't help me then.

Sam, that unit is REALLY old. Like 10 years I believe,. I would really reco selling it and finding something modern with modern charts available.

This would probably serve you well unless you wanted to up the budget.

http://www.byownerelectronics.com/store/product.php?productid=32476&cat=2620&page=2

I purchased my trim tabs and lmf-400 from them. Fast shipping, no tax and free shipping over $400 electronics.

$500, this is a REALLY good bet!
Maps built in.

Me, I went crazy when I found the piece of broken crap that the nice guy broker  f*cked me on and I bought me a nice 10" Standard Horizon unit for a god chunk of change :)
No regrets as I LUV it.

I called Consumers Marine and they said they couldn't get the chip either.

I was on that website this morning Mike.

Looks good.  t^

Yeah, I dont think they have had those chips since almost 2000. At least I heard they hadn't been updated since 1997.

I really think that is your best bet if looking to get way as inexpensively as possible (which I usually am in most cases).

Built in maps, ext antenna and includes transducer for $506 delivered. Seems like a winner.

i THINK my man Young Gull has a similar unit.

I agree. Very resonable.
