A shame people do that, but not surprised at all!

As long as the Pier is not condoning or physically helping keep illegal fish, they are not liable.  Just like a Party or Charter Boat Captain/Crew.  However, the Owners could put a call to Fish & Game to put an officer on the Pier.  Anyone can make a phone call to Operation Game Thief 800-222-0456.

In today's society, no one besides a LEO should be enforcing the Laws.  There are some whacko people out there and some whacko laws that protect those people nts.  Someone trying to do the right thing will end up in Court or Jail over fish...not worth it IMO.

A plastic card with the size and creel limits is given out by the pier operator. the state provides them and I will say that the woman running the pier is concerned about people taking shorts, but is it her responsibility to monitor what's caught?

A pier should be the same as a party boat
1. you pay to fish you don,t need a license on the pier or a party boat ( thats their permit)
2. The Pier managers, Capt of the boat .....are liable to at the very least inform the angler of infractions and if their ignored call enforcement to intervene
3. The managers / Captain's are not cops( and don't have any power to do anything) and should not be liable if they do their best to inform and notify an angler when their non compliant

It's kinda like "if a cop didn't see me I didn't do it", you want to call and rat the guy out yourself by all means go right ahead

Also unless your a cop .........you have no right to touch anyone else's property, I don't care how big you are or how excited you are over someone else's actions

observe and report is one thing ....Dump someone's cooler in the water is another

Thats you taking the law into your own hands

Here's a number to keep in your cell phone.
Anonymity is guaranteed if desired. You are fully protected because no one, not even the person you speak with need ever know your name or address. Rewards are paid confidentially also.

OPERATION GAME THIEF CATEGORIES

1. Commercial exploitation of New Jersey's wildlife resources, including deer, striped bass, shellfish from condemned waters, undersized lobsters, fluke, crab pots, etc.
2. Flagrant violations concerning pheasants, trout, and other freshwater fish, ducks, quail, etc., including over limit netting and trapping, and the use of illegal traps.
3. Pollution of wildlife habitat.
4. Illegal dumping on state lands.
5. Negligent use of firearms, including the destruction of signs.
6. The illegal taking of deer, bear, bobcat, turkey and endangered species.

A minimum reward of $25 will be paid to informants for reporting violations in the above categories which result in a citation being issued. Rewards may be substantially higher depending upon the seriousness of the violation.

A minimum reward of $100 will be paid for the report of violations relating to deer poaching, illegal trapping and the taking of endangered species.

If you see or are aware of a violation, call the toll-free number 1-800-222-0456 and give as much information as possible.

If you desire to remain anonymous you will be assigned a code number of your own choosing. You will be told when to call back to find out the result of your tip. If your information leads to the issuance of a citation, you are eligible for a reward. Arrangements will be made for payment. (Law enforcement officers are not eligible for rewards.)

No one, not even the person you speak with on the phone needs to know your identity. Rewards payments can be made in untraceable bank money orders or in cash and delivered to you as per your instructions. YOU ARE FULLY PROTECTED.

The person who commits wildlife crime for whatever reason is a crook, a thief and a cheat who robs us all of not only our precious wildlife, but also our tax and license dollars. That person cheats us of our outdoor recreation and threatens future generations with diminished wildlife resources.

Help us help you. Don't make excuses for wildlife crime and don't tolerate poaching or other illegal activities among your hunting, fishing, or hiking companions. Report violations and help conserve our wildlife for others to enjoy while at the same time helping yourself.

The more information you can supply and the more specific you can be, the better the chances for apprehending the violator. Here are some things to look for:

Names, addresses, age(s) of suspects, along with as complete a description as possible.
Vehicle description and license plate number.
Type of violation - be specific - when and where it occurred.
Where is the contraband stored? How was it transported?
Report violations as promptly as possible. The quicker the information is received, the better the chances for an arrest.
REMEMBER, THE OPERATION GAME THIEF NUMBER CAN BE CALLED 24 HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. 1-800-222-0456.

Well, after two years of being on this forum there is finally a calling for my expertise-I'd be happy to conduct surveillance and work undercover fishing  TT^ In tens years as a private detective I've only been able to don the fishing gear while on a surveillance once 5hrug

The sad thing is I wish my expertise was more along the lines of landing big 'uns!  fcp
