Butterfly Jigging for Stripers

One of my favorite ways to fish is vertical jigging for stripers.  After reading and hearing so much about it, this fall/winter I would like to try Butterfly jigging  for stripers (mostly on party boats).  So far I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a Shimano Torium 16, loading it up with 50# braid and pairing that reel up with the 6'6" medium Shimano Trevala jigging rod.  But I can be persuaded otherwise.

If any of you have any experience doing this can you please answer some questions for me? 

1.  Do you think the set-up I described above is good?
2.  What type, size, and color jigs would be best for stripers in 30'-70'of water?
3.  I understand there is a lot more to it than just the tackle.  Can anyone recommend someone that can teach me the proper technique for Butterfly jigging for stripers?

Hi Bucktail,

I vertical jig tuna from offshore boats in California.

I have a Penn Torque paired with a Shimano Trevala. I use the heavier Trevala.

I don't use Shimano for large pelagics so I cannot comment on them.

I use the Shimano Butterfly jigs but there are many alternative (and cheaper) models.

Excellent way to catch fish!

First comment is - if you are going on a party boat, be aware that most captains will not allow braided line.  Check first with the boat you plan on fishing from.

Second - I too planned to use butterfly jigs for stripers and invested in 2 jigs (I was surprised how expensive they are). My first trip the blue fish bit both off.  Way too expensive to loose.  For years I have jigged stripers using less expensive ava and crocodile jigs and have been successful.  I'll stick with those.

Do you have any size, type, or color recommendations for butterfly jigs for stripers?  I know there a quite a few styles, such as flatside jigs, long jigs etc.  Any clues would be appreciated.

I have been on quite a few party boats for stripers and have yet to encounter one that bans braid (although I could understand that rule on say a night chumming bluefish trip).  Do you know any specific boats that ban braid so I can avoid them?

Hi Bucktail,

As I use the Shimano jigs, I have just about every color and size they make. You of course match the size (number of grains) to the Trevala rod.

I jig for Stripers in the fall and find that anything with silver or green (green/yellow) work.

I catch weakies on a blue/pink if I remember. To me, it is matching the size of the bait (Fall has sand eels, hopefully, in the area) so green is good.

With butterfly jigs, it is my opinion that it is more a reaction strike so technique trumps colors.
