NOAA reports wrong?
« on: September 23, 2008, 01:47:42 PM »
After seeing some of the pix from the last few days, it seems that the NOAA forecast reports are way off...I cancelled a trip with my son on Sunday because of the forecast of 7' seas. How's it been out there? Also, are there more reliable sites I should be checking?

Thanks,
Ross

I nearly cancelled a Sunday trip as well. I would say the swells were around 7 feet though and the forecast was right on. A trip to the Shark River Inlet cleared up whether my 21 footer could handle it. Turned out to be a nice day.

Hi Ross,

I live very close to the beach and I usually check it everyday.  Today they are calling for pretty snotty seas and getting worse tonight.  In the past few days the winds have been out of the NE and will be like this till the weekend.

The seas are bad and I would not like to be our there.  In fact the beaches are taking a beating and will till the wind changes direction.

A condition called a Fetch will come into play here.  A fetch is when the wind is coming out of one direction with nothing to stop it over a long distance for a long period of time time.  This fetch will continue till the weekend and cause a lot of problems.

As far as looking for a better site I do not think there is only one site with the right weather all the time.  I look at a number of sites and with courses I have taken put together my own twist to the out come.  I think I come pretty close most of the time.

Believe it or not the NWS has sort of a course on line.  It covers a lot and answer a lot of questions you might have.

Weather can be fun and if you can put together all the conditions that come into play and get it right, just think you have done something the NWS has been trying to get right since their inception.

Good Luck

Paul

Thanks Paul, I appreciate the feedback. I will do my homework!

As I do most of my fishing with my 9yo son, I tend play it pretty conservatively when it comes to the conditions.

Thanks again!
Ross

actually the forecast was right on most people dont realize the diff between 4-7 ground swell and wind driven chop.

4-6 ground swell 12 sec apart = very fishable

4-6 stacked chop 3 sec apart = time to go home

I used to missed too many days of fishing listening to the weather forcast. That is why I go and see for myself before I decide to cancel a trip.  t^
