How much braid?
« on: August 20, 2012, 10:56:31 AM »
I will be putting 50# braid on my new okuma cr-603's. I was going o back it with 80# or 50# mono. How much braid should I use. These reels are used for standup inshore tuna/shark so I need them to be multipurpose.

Fred, fishing the "Kristy Marie" from Manasquan River Club. Channels 16/67/68.

I put 1 or 2 layers of mono on the spool, uni-uni to the braid, fill the spool with braid, uni-uni again to mono top shot (if necessary, length based on target fish)

those reels say they will hold 410 yards of 50lb mono,,  save some dollars and go that route.

I went with 50lb momoi diamond which consistently breaks higher. The fish we had to max drag(23lbs) to turn had that line on it and held.

70 bucks for a 1000 yard spool there abouts

With larger reels that have the capacity for mono, there really is no advantage to using braid for trolling or bait setups, only downfalls.

downfalls? yes, less abrasion resistance, ability to cut a finger, hand, some ones neck if you fall and drag the line across somebody, and more knots will have to be put inline for bottom and top shots. Generally a knot will reduce a lines strength by 20-30%, even braid falls under this rule.

small reels with low line capacity for jigging and casting,, braid away

1/3 Mono back, then 2/3 braid.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

I agree with R/T.

Why are you thinking braid for the reels?  Just personal preference?

Inshore the fish cant run you deep like they do in the canyons, they run out of real estate - shallower water.

400+ yds is plenty for what you'll see inshore. If you tangle with something that gets close to spooling you, run and chase.
