Here is your Labor Day Weekend Fishing and Boating Weather Outlook. The weekend is not looking the best and definitely not one of the nicer weekends of the Summer. However, it will not be a complete washout, either. A very unsettled weather pattern will move through the region over the next five days or so, before stabilizing mid to end of next week. Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies will dominate with some breaks in the clouds and sun mixed in. Friday Night into Saturday Morning and Saturday Night into Sunday Morning will see some patchy fog across most of the state, especially coastal areas. Through Wednesday will have chances of rain and thunderstorms. Saturday Night through Monday Night will have the highest chances, most likely scattered or widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some of the thunderstorms could be strong to severe on Saturday and Sunday, so far. With high pressure sitting offshore to the south, a southwesterly flow will return again this weekend. Coupled with a lifting warm front, it will be warm and humid. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80’s inland with low 80’s along/on the water and across northern areas. Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 60’s inland, low 70’s along/on the water and low to mid 60’s across northern areas. Dew points will continue to be in the 60’s and 70’s with moist, humid air in place over the area. Humidity will be moderate to high with mostly muggy conditions all weekend. Water conditions will be ok, mostly rated good for Inshore to Midshore waters. A moderate to strong southerly flow will setup this weekend with a short period chop, with Southern inshore waters seeing some cautious conditions due to gusty winds averaging around 15 knots with gusts to 20 knots and seas 2-3 feet at 6 seconds, mostly in the 3 foot range Sunday Afternoon. Midshore to Offshore will have cautious conditions reaching Small Craft Advisory levels with winds to 25 knots and seas to 5 feet at 6 seconds from Saturday Afternoon through Monday Morning. Water temperatures are mostly unchanged, although the southerly flow could slightly change that. Rivers and bays are in the upper 70’s, with all other coastal waters in the low to mid 70’s. Surf and beach conditions look good, however Moderate Risks of rip currents are likely with gustier winds, some rougher surf possible with wave heights 2-3 foot and a southerly swell at 2-3 feet at 6 seconds. UV Index will be high to very high.
High pressure will move offshore Friday. A warm front will lift through the area Sunday Night into Monday followed by a slow moving cold front Monday Night.
The remainder of the week will continue the same weather as this weekend before clearing out with high pressure returning. By Wednesday more sun than clouds with some slightly cooler and drier air. Highs will be in the upper 70’s to low 80’s with cooler overnight lows in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s. Dew points will be lower and less humidity. Water and surf conditions look good, however winds will be gustier and seas still up around 2-3 feet, especially Midshore to Offshore, which could see 15 knot winds and 4 foot seas most of the week.
Still watching the tropics, with activity increasing by the day. You all know how I relay information. No hype, no wish casting (believe me the last thing I want to deal with is another tropical cyclone into NJ, but these are the facts!) Dry air and Saharan Desert dust have reduced significantly off of Africa. This is allowing moist air and optimal conditions to move in for tropical development. Going into the peak of Hurricane Season, the Atlantic is primed with very little activity so far, leaving a lot of potential energy there. With the Bermuda High that has dominated the Atlantic Ocean most of the last three months shifting east, it is opening up the East Coast from its protection. All forecasting agencies are in agreement with this scenario that is slowly setting up. This means really watching any areas of interest or invest for development. As always, you will get the very latest and most important updates right here at NJSWF. Not need to panic, just be vigilant!
Have a safe and happy Labor Day Weekend!
