NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Labor Day Weekend 2013
« on: August 29, 2013, 08:49:32 PM »
Here is your Labor Day Weekend Fishing and Boating Weather Outlook.  The weekend is not looking the best and definitely not one of the nicer weekends of the Summer.  However, it will not be a complete washout, either.  A very unsettled weather pattern will move through the region over the next five days or so, before stabilizing mid to end of next week.  Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies will dominate with some breaks in the clouds and sun mixed in.  Friday Night into Saturday Morning and Saturday Night into Sunday Morning will see some patchy fog across most of the state, especially coastal areas.  Through Wednesday will have chances of rain and thunderstorms.  Saturday Night through Monday Night will have the highest chances, most likely scattered or widely scattered showers and thunderstorms.  Some of the thunderstorms could be strong to severe on Saturday and Sunday, so far.  With high pressure sitting offshore to the south, a southwesterly flow will return again this weekend.  Coupled with a lifting warm front, it will be warm and humid.  High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80’s inland with low 80’s along/on the water and across northern areas.  Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 60’s inland, low 70’s along/on the water and low to mid 60’s across northern areas.  Dew points will continue to be in the 60’s and 70’s with moist, humid air in place over the area.  Humidity will be moderate to high with mostly muggy conditions all weekend.  Water conditions will be ok, mostly rated good for Inshore to Midshore waters.  A moderate to strong southerly flow will setup this weekend with a short period chop, with Southern inshore waters seeing some cautious conditions due to gusty winds averaging around 15 knots with gusts to 20 knots and seas 2-3 feet at 6 seconds, mostly in the 3 foot range Sunday Afternoon.  Midshore to Offshore will have cautious conditions reaching Small Craft Advisory levels with winds to 25 knots and seas to 5 feet at 6 seconds from Saturday Afternoon through Monday Morning.  Water temperatures are mostly unchanged, although the southerly flow could slightly change that.  Rivers and bays are in the upper 70’s, with all other coastal waters in the low to mid 70’s.  Surf and beach conditions look good, however Moderate Risks of rip currents are likely with gustier winds, some rougher surf possible with wave heights 2-3 foot and a southerly swell at 2-3 feet at 6 seconds.  UV Index will be high to very high.

High pressure will move offshore Friday.  A warm front will lift through the area Sunday Night into Monday followed by a slow moving cold front Monday Night.

The remainder of the week will continue the same weather as this weekend before clearing out with high pressure returning.  By Wednesday more sun than clouds with some slightly cooler and drier air.  Highs will be in the upper 70’s to low 80’s with cooler overnight lows in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s.  Dew points will be lower and less humidity.  Water and surf conditions look good, however winds will be gustier and seas still up around 2-3 feet, especially Midshore to Offshore, which could see 15 knot winds and 4 foot seas most of the week.

Still watching the tropics, with activity increasing by the day.  You all know how I relay information.  No hype, no wish casting (believe me the last thing I want to deal with is another tropical cyclone into NJ, but these are the facts!)  Dry air and Saharan Desert dust have reduced significantly off of Africa.  This is allowing moist air and optimal conditions to move in for tropical development.  Going into the peak of Hurricane Season, the Atlantic is primed with very little activity so far, leaving a lot of potential energy there.  With the Bermuda High that has dominated the Atlantic Ocean most of the last three months shifting east, it is opening up the East Coast from its protection.  All forecasting agencies are in agreement with this scenario that is slowly setting up.  This means really watching any areas of interest or invest for development.  As always, you will get the very latest and most important updates right here at NJSWF.  Not need to panic, just be vigilant!

Have a safe and happy Labor Day Weekend!

Good Afternoon!  A mix of clouds and sun will continue today with some showers popping up across northern NJ and maybe a shower moving into Central Western NJ.  It will remain mostly dry across most of the state during the day with very low chances of showers and thunderstorms, except for northern/northwestern areas will have a chance of isolated or scattered showers and thunderstorms today.  Tonight the chances will increase statewide, with possible scattered showers and thunderstorms.  There is a generalized risk of severe weather, so any thunderstorms could become strong to severe capable of producing damaging winds, frequent lightning and heavy rains.  High temperatures are in the mid to upper 80’s inland with low 80’s along/on the water and for northern areas.  Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 70’s inland and along/on the water with mid 60’s across northern areas.  Dew points are in the mid 60’s to mid 70’s today making it very humid.  High humidity will continue throughout the rest of the weekend.

Water conditions are not the best today and are rated cautious to good.  Inshore to Midshore waters are mostly good, however winds are gusty today and seas building with short period wind chop waves.  These conditions are just below SCA criteria.  Midshore to Offshore has cautious conditions with Small Craft Advisories.  Raritan Bay will have south winds 10-15 knots diminishing to 5-10 knot tonight with seas 1 foot or less and limited visibility at times to 1-3 nautical miles.  Barnegat Bay will have south-southwest winds around 12 knots with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have southwest winds 5-10 knots increasing to south winds at 10-15 knots this afternoon then diminishing tonight to 5-10 knots again with seas 2-3 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have south-southwest winds 10-20 knots with higher gusts and seas 3-4 feet at 6 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore will have south-southwest winds becoming south at 10-25 knots with some higher gusts and seas 4-5 feet at 6 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are ok again with Moderate Risks of rip currents.  Winds will continue from the southwest at 10-15 mph with some higher gusts.  Surf will be normal to rough at times with wave heights around 3 feet with a 3 foot south swell at 5 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 70’s.  UV Index is High at 7/15.

The NHC is still watching two areas in the tropics, but no big changes.

Have a great Saturday!!

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Wednesday will be the nicest in terms of no rain and low humidity.  Wednesday looks to be dry, highs in the upper 70's to lower 80's with some drier air.  Water conditions look good, but will be a bit windy out of the west-northwest at 15 knots or so with inshore ocean seas 2 feet at 6 seconds.  Monday and Tuesday will have less winds, seas will be mostly unchanged, but they both have chances of showers and thunderstorms and higher humidity through Tuesday Night.

Good afternoon!  Partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies today. Some areas have already had some scattered showers and thunderstorms with heavy rains and lightning.  Scattered showers and thunderstorms chances will continue the rest of the day and into the overnight.  There is a generalized risk of severe weather so some storms could be strong to severe with damaging winds, frequent lightning and heavy rains.  High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80’s inland with low to mid 80’s along/on the water and across northern areas.  Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 70’s with mid 60’s across northern areas.  Dew points are mostly in the low to mid 70’s with a few mid to upper 60’s scattered about.  This is making very humid and muggy conditions today!

Water conditions are rated good again, however there is still a strong southerly flow over the area with gusty winds and higher seas.  Raritan Bay will have south winds 5-10 knots with seas 1 foot or less, limited visibility to 1-3 nautical miles and patchy fog late.  Barnegat Bay will have south winds 5-10 knots with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have south winds changing to southwest 5-10 knots with seas 1-2 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have southwest/south-southwest winds 10-15 knots with some higher gusts possible and seas 3 feet at 5-6 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore will have southwest/south-southwest winds 10-20 knots with seas 3-5 feet at 5-6 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good to ok with Low Risks of rip currents.  Winds are from the south around 10 mph with some occasional higher gusts with normal surf and wave heights 2-3 feet with a 3 foot south swell at 5 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the upper 60’s to low 70’s.  UV Index High at 7/15.

Have a great rest of your Sunday!

Good afternoon!  Scattered showers and thunderstorms are kicking up this afternoon with gusty winds, frequent lightning and heavy rains causing Flood Advisories and Flash Flood Warnings.  Storms are coming from the southwest moving northeast.  Cloudy conditions and chances of scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue throughout the day and into the overnight.  There is a generalized risk of severe weather again with the main threat damaging winds, frequent lightning, heavy rains and hail across northwestern NJ.  High temperatures in the low to mid 80’s with overnight lows in the low 70’s and low 60’s for northern areas.  Dew points are in the upper 60’s to mid 70’s making it very humid and muggy.

Water conditions are rated good today with winds and seas subsiding some from the weekend.  However, some rain and residual fog is limiting visibility in some areas to less than a ¼ nautical mile. There will still be some higher wind gusts and some higher seas with a moderate short period chop!  Raritan Bay will have south winds around 5 knots changing to the west tonight with seas 1 foot or less, patchy fog after midnight and visibility limited to 1-3 nautical miles.  Barnegat Bay will have southwest winds around 6 knots becoming variable around 5 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have west wind 5-10 knots becoming southwest tonight at 5 knots with seas 1-2 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have south-southwest/southwest/south winds 6-13 knots with seas 2-3 feet at 5 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore will have south-southwest/south winds 6-15 knots with seas 3-4 feet at 5 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good with Low Risks of rip currents.  Southwest winds will be 5-10 mph with normal surf and wave heights around 3 feet with a 2 foot southeast swell at 5 seconds.  It is rainy and foggy on the beaches right now, making visibility less than a 1/4 of a mile, under 100 yards in places!!  Surf temperatures are in the mid 60’s to low 70’s.  UV Index is still High at 7/15.

Be safe and have a great Labor Day despite the less than great weather!
