It’s going to be a rough start to the week for weather and water conditions.  The weather will clear before water conditions.  Monday will see snow changing to a wintry mix in the early morning hours changing over to rain for all areas except northern/northwestern NJ.  These areas will see an accumulation of a few inches of snow, becoming a mix then freezing rain through a good portion of the day.  Precipitation will continue all day with lower chances at night before those chances increase for Tuesday with another round of wintry precipitation before clearing out for Tuesday Night.  This will be the end of the any precipitation until Saturday.  Temperatures will be warmer on Monday with a lifting warm front on Sunday Night and then they will drop and become very cold behind a cold front moving through Tuesday.  Monday’s high temperatures will be in the upper 40’s to low 50’s for all areas except northern areas which will only see low 40’s.  Highs the rest of the week will only be in the 30’s the rest of the week.  Overnight lows this week will get down into the 20’s and 30’s with teens for northern areas.   Water conditions look cautious to hazardous depending on location with Small Craft Advisories and Gale Warnings for offshore locations through Thursday.  On Thursday, conditions will improve for the remainder of the week.  Winds with gale force gusts are possible and seas 5-7 feet are probable.  Surf and beach conditions will be good to ok maybe even cautious due to winds.  Winds will be gusty from the west to southwest and northwest all week up to 20 knots with gusts to 25 knots.  Surf could be rough at times, especially on Monday and Tuesday before being back to normal.  Wave heights will be higher on Monday and Tuesday around 1-3 feet then back to 1-2 feet on Wednesday to Friday.  Despite, ocean conditions being poor, the west winds will keep the surf down this week.  Water temperatures are steady from last week.  Rivers and bays are in the low to mid 40’s.  Surf temperatures are in the mid 40’s with some upper 40’s and low 40’s in places.  Ocean waters are in the upper 40’s to low 50’s with mid 50’s offshore.  UV Index will be Low at 0-2/15.

High pressure will move into New England by Sunday Evening.  A low pressure system will move through the Great Lakes Region through Monday, bringing a cold front through the area late Monday.  A low pressure system will develop and move up along the Mid Atlantic Coast on Monday.  A secondary front will move through the region late Tuesday into Wednesday.  High pressure will then build into the region from the west on Wednesday before shifting east of the area at the end of the week.

The weekend will have chances of precipitation possible in the form of snow or wintry mix mixed with rain.  Rain to mix to snow will go from southeast to northwest with areas to the southeast in rain and moving up to the northwest which will see mostly snow.  Accumulations look to be low right now, but this will be something to watch this week.  Highs will continue in the 20’s and 30’s with lows in the teens, 20’s and 30’s.  Water and beach conditions look good for the weekend so far.

Have a great week and be safe!

I added Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet NY BuoyWeather Forecasts for the many of you who fish that area.  BuoyWeather and NWS PHI/OKX are not agreeing on forecasts this week.  There will definitely be gusty winds to 20-25 knots this week through Thursday with seas 4-7 feet.  If you are planning on going out, I would take a look at both and then buoy reports and see which forecasts are more accurate.

I will update in the mornings.  Have a good week!

Good morning!  It is a cloudy and wet start.  Most areas only saw rain since midnight with the exception of Northwestern Counties.  These areas have seen a wintry mix and some freezing rain/icing.  There is a Winter Weather Advisory for Sussex, Warren, Morris, Essex, Passaic, Union and Bergen Counties for accumulating ice due to freezing rain.  Areas getting rain have had 0.25-0.5 more inches of rain.  Rain will continue today and the chance of a wintry mix across Northwestern NJ will continue today before tapering off and becoming scattered tonight and into the overnight.  High temperatures will be in the upper 40’s to low 50’s with the exception of those northern counties will be in the low 40’s.  Overnight lows will low 30’s inland, mid 30’s along the coast and mid 20’s across northern areas.  Winds will be moderate from the east around 5-10 mph inland and 10-15 mph along the coast with gusts to 20 knots.

Water conditions will be cautious to hazardous with Small Craft Advisories inshore and Gale Warnings offshore today on ocean waters from Sandy Hook east to Montauk and south to Delaware.  Winds will be northwest at 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots and seas 3-5 feet.  Raritan Bay will have east winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots becoming southeast at 5-10 knots late morning, then west with gusts to 20 knots in the afternoon then west 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots at night with seas 1-2 feet.  Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet will have east winds 15-20 knots becoming southeast 10-15 knots in the late morning then south in the afternoon shifting and increasing to the west at 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots in the afternoon then west at night with seas 4-7 feet subsiding to 3-5 feet at night.  Barnegat Bay will have east winds 10-15 knots becoming west-southwest in the afternoon then west 10-12 knots at night and northwest after midnight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have east winds 5-10 knots becoming southwest 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots then northwest 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots at night with seas 2-3 feet and visibility limited to 1-3 nm.  Inshore ocean waters will have east winds 10-15 knots becoming southeast, then west at 15-20 knots this afternoon then decreasing from the northwest at 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots with seas 4-6 feet at 6 seconds subsiding to 3-5 feet at 8 seconds tonight.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have west to southwest winds 15-25 knots with gusts to 30 knots then west to northwest tonight and north to northwest after midnight with seas 4-8 feet at 6-7 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions will be ok to cautious.  Winds will be east to northeast becoming west to southwest in the afternoon at 10-15 knots with gusts to 20+ knots.  Surf will be rough with wave heights 2-4 feet with a 3-5 foot east-southeast swell at 5 seconds.  Surf temperatures are still in the mid 40’s.  UV Index will be Low at 0/15.

Have a great Monday!  Stay dry!!

Re: Potential Snow for Tuesday 12/10
« Reply #3 on: December 09, 2013, 12:14:39 PM »
There is potential for some accumulating snow tomorrow, Tuesday 12/10.  This will probably start out as a mix or rain for some areas (coastal and southern), but snow for the rest starting later morning/early afternoon and be done by evening!  Anywhere from 1-3 inches looks like the forecast with Central Western NJ the jackpot this time.  This could make for a messy commute home!

This is likely to change and totals could go either way.  As the short range models start picking this up, I will update with any new information.  I would not be surprised to see totals increased?!

Re: Winter Storm Warning/Winter Weather Advisories for Tuesday
« Reply #5 on: December 09, 2013, 04:25:29 PM »
The NWS has come around to the idea that tomorrow's snow event is going to be more than just a dusting.  Winter Storm Warnings have been posted for Tuesday from 6A-5P for Mercer, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem Counties and neighboring PA Counties for 3-6 inches of snow possible.

Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for every other county in NJ, except Sussex County.  These areas will see 2-4 inches of snow.

Snow is likely to start in the morning, lasting most of the day before tapering off in the afternoon and evening.

Good morning!  It is cloudy this morning and most of the state has some precipitation with rain across very southern portions.  It is at or below freezing statewide, except for very Southern NJ.  Northern areas have had snow since around 7AM.  There seems to be a bubble over parts of Burlington, Ocean and Monmouth Counties, where nothing has fallen yet today, but snow is slowly moving into these areas and already accumulating. The NWS forecasts have not changed since yesterday.  Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remain the same. Overallll accumulations are still in the 1-6 inch range.  Some heavier bands and heavier pockets of snow are possible.  High temperatures today have already occurred this morning in the low to upper 30’s.  For the rest of the day temperatures will remain at or below freezing.  Extremely frigid air will move in behind this system moving through with overnight lows in the teens and 20’s.  Winds will be moderate from the west at 5-15 mph with up to 20 mph along the coast.

Water conditions will be cautious today with Small Craft Advisories for all coastal waters from Sandy Hook to Delaware including Raritan Bay, Delaware Bay and Delaware River.  Gale Warnings are in effect for Sandy Hook to Montauk and all offshore waters.  Here are some local forecasts:

Re: Potential Nor'Easter This Weekend
« Reply #7 on: December 10, 2013, 12:24:55 PM »
Watching another system coming out of the Gulf/South at the end of the week that will affect the area sometime later Saturday and Sunday.  It looks to be a moderate coastal storm that really intensifies into New England.  This will bring the typical effects and possibly some snow, especially for northern/northwestern NJ.  Lots of details to sort out...at minimum, it will be wet this weekend and this system will looks to affect coastal waters.

Good morning!  COLD, but sunny this morning with some clouds mixed in.  Most areas were in the teens and 20’s last night with the exception of extreme Southern NJ, where Cape May was just a couple degrees above freezing.  There is potential for icy roadways and walkways from any leftover snow and water from yesterday that refroze overnight.  It looks to be dry today with a chance of snow showers tonight across northern/northwestern areas.  High temperatures will seem more like lows today with low 30’s and mid 30’s across Cape May County.  Overnight lows will drop back into the low 20’s inland, mid to upper 20’s along the coast and low teens for northern areas.  Again anything that melts from the sun today will refreeze quickly by evening again, so roads and walkways could be icy!  Winds will be moderate from the west inland at 5-15 mph with 10-15 mph along the coast.  This will make for wind chills in the teens today and even single digits.  Bundle up and make sure to protect exposed skin by limiting exposure.

Water conditions have or will improve today depending on location.  Southern Areas north to Little Egg Harbor are good and SCA’s have been cancelled.  Northern Areas from Raritan Bay east to Montauk and south to Little Egg Inlet still have Small Craft Advisories and cautious conditions.  Midshore to Offshore has cautious conditions and they may persist longer than inshore.  Here are some local conditions:

Good morning!  Very COLD this morning, but sunny with a few clouds.  There are some scattered snow showers this morning across the center of the state.  These showers have weakened as they have moved east-southeast out of the Poconos, but they could still leave a dusting of snow.  Besides these few scattered showers, the rest of today will be dry and mostly sunny becoming partly cloudy to mostly clear tonight.  Temperatures are below freezing statewide with single digits in northwestern NJ.  High temperatures will only get into upper 20’s to low 30’s and many areas will not break the freezing mark today!  Overnight lows will be in the mid teens inland, upper teens to low 20’s along coastal areas and lower teens across northern areas.  Winds will be moderate from the northwest then west tonight at 10-15 mph with 15-20+ mph along southern coastal areas.  Wind chills will make it feel like the teens or colder today!

Water conditions are back to cautious with Small Craft Advisories in effect for all coastal waters from Sandy Hook east to Montauk and south to Delaware including Delaware Bay and the Delaware River.  Northern Offshore waters have Gale Warnings posted.  These conditions look to persist through the weekend, first from pressure gradients with passing frontal boundaries and then from a low pressure system this weekend.  Winds will gust to 25 knots with gale force gusts possible.  Raritan Bay will have northwest winds 15-20 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots later this morning, then west at 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots tonight with seas 1-2 feet.  Barnegat Bay will have north-northwest winds around 15 knots becoming west-northwest in the afternoon, then west tonight with seas around 2 feet.  Delaware Bay will have northwest winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 30 knots becoming west tonight with seas 2-3 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have northwest winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 30 knots becoming west tonight with winds increasing to 20-25 knots with seas 3-5 feet at 4 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have northwest winds 20-30 knots becoming west to northwest at 25-30 knots tonight with seas 4-8 feet at 5 seconds increasing to 6-10 feet at 5 seconds tonight.

Surf and beaches will be good to ok.  The only thing to contend with is gusty northwest to west winds.  Winds will be 10-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots possible at times increasing tonight.  Surf is normal with wave heights 1-3 feet with a 2 foot east swell at 4 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 1-2/15.

Have a great day!

Surf and beach conditions will be good to ok.  OK, only due to west to northwest winds to 25 knots today.  Winds will average 10-20 knots with gusts over 30 knots possible at times.  The west winds will keep the surf normal.  Right now it is calm with barely any waves breaking with a 2 foot west swell.  Wave heights will continue 1-2 feet.  Any areas with lighter winds could see 1-3 feet at times.  There is a 2-3 foot west swell at 4 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 1-2/15.

Have a great Friday!  Stay warm.  Weekend storm update to come with Winter Storm Watches for Northern NJ and an increase in snowfall totals.
