Joe,
What's new here is that the original Fireline is not a
true braid. It is actually made by using an extrusion process in which many polyethylene strands are thermally fused together. If you notice, Berkley does not market Fireline as a braid. It is often referred to as a "superline".
If you compare a length of Fireline against some Power Pro or Sufix you can easily see the difference. Original Fireline is not round and, in fact, you will notice many flat spots in it. It also feels stiffer than the true braids.
Berkley (Pure Fishing) has made a number of true braided lines over the years. They include Gorilla Braid (one of the first), Big Game Braid and Whiplash. They now also manufacture braids under the Spiderwire and Stren brands.
So who knows? This could be one of Pure Fishing's many other braided lines just recycled using the Fireline name, or it could be something truly new.
In any case, I may have to try some out for myself.
