What is a Pout ?

Didn't want to chime in on someone's fishing report to ask this question . They caught a pout and I was curious , ( what is it ?  and can someone post  a picture?)   thanx

Mistakenly called a conger by many. Two different species.

As mentioned, many erroneously call the Ocean Pout a conger eel.  Our silver eels are the true conger eels.

Pout doesn't taste all that bad either t^

LOL Joe  rofla I think it has more to do with all the colligen injections rather than not getting her way though.. Which is fine until the stuff leaks out..then they go from carp-lips to clam strips!  chrz

Ok, conger eel is one that I've heard of. I was on an offshore cod trip on the Jamaica a bunch of yrs ago when I caught this eel/ling looking thing. The mate called it a condra eel or conger eel, I'm not sure which one anymore since it''s been over 10 yrs now. Anyway this thing had a huge head, huge pec. fins with a long linglike body. It also had a serious mouth with 2 teeth top and bottom, Color of fish was green/brown. Did not look like the eel above. What was it?

We typically catch two type of "eels" when winter fishing for Cod, Ling and Seabass offshore.

Silver Eels look like eel but only bigger- Dark on top and light on bottom.

Conger Eel or Ocean Pout are greenish in color and have a large head and big rubber looking lips.  I are not really conger eels but that is what we call them.  Ocean pout are good to eat and fight like heck, but ugly as can be.
