Any of you guys try wiggle rigs for fluke??
« on: May 22, 2007, 02:12:11 PM »
I like how they really move. I tied a couple of "similar" rigs to give it a shot.. I ususally go by the old adage "keep it simple stupid" and have done pretty well going with that philosphy, But I am always looking to add another weapon to the fluke catching arsenal.. ;D

I tried the wiggle rig last year and caught nothing.  I think the problem is that the plastic piece that makes it wiggle, floats too far off the bottom.  Very, very dissapointed in something that looks very good at first.  Just my experience.

I've seen soft bates used with lead head jigs with bucktails and heard they were killers.  Worth a try... :D :D :D

I have had guys on my boat use the wiggle rig.  They didn't seem to do any better or any worse that others on the boat using other type of rigs.

I have found the lead head jigs with rubber strand skirt to work great!

Or these guys. I make my own, you can get the supplies at Cabelas. You just need to make sure you get a strong hook.

We have tried them and cannot say that they are bad, but have several rigs that totally out fished them........Have great luck with either white or chartrusse bucktails using 4-6" squid strips with a split tail.

One of the best rigs is one we tie, a dropper loop on the bottom for the sinker. Come up 8" tie a dropper and then 2-3 more going up the line 6" apart. Rig jumbo Kellie on the hooks coming off the droppers, looks like a small fish school......really works great t^

Hi Capt. Bob,

Thanks for the info on your rig.

Have you tried a bucktail or chrome ball or anything with a hook instead of the sinker or is that overkill?

Thanks,

Capt. Ed

Capt Ed

I've used the chrome ball both with and w/o the buck tail hook or trailer hook....they work good, I believe more so for the flash than anything else.

The last two early Fluke seasons, I've had my guys bouncing Hopkins (silver w/bucktail) or Red/White bucktails off the bottom and they have done real good. It takes a little bit to convience people that it will work, but once they do and and catch fish they are hooked (Pun) TT^

Hi Rod,

Picture attached ... not a great photo (it has more red in the tail) than can be seen. It has a treble hook as well (and the chrome is dimpled).

This is a deadly, must have lure. I am sure you have seen them in the past.

Thanks,

Ed

You can make a bunch of rigs that work.  What is use as stated above, a large spro, or chrome jig with strip bait from a 3 way swivel, on the top portion of the 3 way swivel I put a leader with just a plain fluke hook, and I only use gammies for hooks.  Put bait on that hook also.  Do not put the same bait on both hooks because you want to give the fluke a varity to see what there liking is.  If a particular bait is getting more action, then put the same bait on both hooks. My largest came from the spro with a huge smelt on it, but my quantity came from the gulp mullet.  Make sure you use the size ball jig or spro to hold bottom as that will also act as your weight.

Hi Nick,

If you don't mind, which type of gami do you use? I have experimented with a lot of types and always seem to migrate back to Kahle hooks (4/0)?

Thanks in advance,

Ed

I use the basice semi circle fluke hooks, not sure of the name, but my size will vary a bit depending on where I am fishing.  If I fish the back bays, I will use the smaller hook to pick up more fish, when I am in the ocean, I will use a larger hook.  I try to keep the top hook smaller then the bottom spro hook for versitility.  In the ocean, I use a 3oz spro, in the bay I go to a 1oz if i can hold bottom.  When the current is really strong, I don't use the spro as they don't come heavy enough, then I go to the chrome jig mostly because they come in heavier sizes.

Now the decision next week is to target those stripers, or start my Fluke adventures.  The only way I can make this decission is using the help from the members on this site.  If I hear that other are hitting the fluke very well, then that will be nexts week target.  If the reports are coming in shaky for the fluke, then I will spend another week for the stripers.
