Mako and blue shark usually start up in June in NJ.

Take a hike out to the mud hole, find good bottom to drift over or a wreck that is know to hold fish and set out the chum. Put on blue fish or mackeral for bait, whole or slabs. Blue fish is one of the Mako shark's favorite food.

I have heard guys complain that they drew in a lot of blue fish with their chum. Do not get discouraged if you do draw in blue fish as that is a staple to the shark diet. Catch a few blue fish and you now have fresh bait for shark.

Happy hunting.  t^

I don't go much, but when I head to the mud bouy for bluefish, I will always balloon a bluefish fillet out in the slick.  The best part of being off shore... YOU NEVER KNOW what you will catch.  Always give yourself the opportunity for that surprise.

It is fun, but a lot of times you get the skunk or Blue sharks.

You can make your first stop near the oil wreck, about 15-20 miles out of Shark River. West edge of the mud hole.

BENF,

NJ Angler did a Shark Fishing Show.  They were targeting Threshers, but hooked into several other species(brown, blue, etc...) just a few miles from shore.  You could see the beaches and land from where they were fishing.  This is not the ideal location for sharks, but you can always try.  It is possible.  Heck, Surfrocket gets them in the surf ;D!

Find the bunker schools in the spring and you may jump a thresher. We have had several hook up while fluke fishing when the bunker schools were around. Several only a mile or two off the beach.  TT^

Also saw some free jumping threshers in the bunker schools.  t^

considering that the surf rocket can get them off the beach at night in August, all you have to do is drop bunkers off the boat, close to the beach at night.. You can go wrong, its worth a try.
