Fuel water seprator???
« on: May 23, 2007, 07:46:28 PM »
Buying boat this week. Off top of my head, I do not recall if the 175hp Johnson OB has a fuel water seperator (or one with the glass bowl like I want).

Is this something that is relatively easy to install? How much should it cost f I have my marina do it for me?

Much appreciated.

I failed to mention I am not very mechanically inclined ( I am more of a techy type guy), but one of my buddies is VERy mechanically inclined, so hopefully we can bang it out.

Is it as simple as mounting the seprator and splicing it in between the line?

Thanks.

Hi Mboy,

They will probably charge one hours work. That is about $125 labor plus parts these days.

Do it yourself.

If there is no water separator at all you will need to buy the filter and the

The hardest part of the install is priming the filer. Well, Racor (which should be the only brand you buy) solved that problem with a primer bulb built on the filter system. The link is:

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/263267/0/0/racor/All_2/mode+matchallpartial/0/0

If you want to keep your primer bulb, you can pick up a Racor without the primer bulb for about $70. Remember to fill the system with gas to prime it before installing. There are other tricks I can describe on the phone to help prime it.

So, you will need a place to mount it on the transom, that takes two screws and some 3M 5200 to seal any holes. Make sure you have enough clearance to be able to turn the screw on the bottom of the bowl if you need to let out water.

You will have to cut your fuel line so that you can install the filter. No big deal there.

You will need two stainless clamps, one for the tank side hose and one for the engine side hose.

You have to have the filter system between the tank and the primer bulb for your engine.

Where do you live? I am in Toms River. We can do it in about 15 minutes.

Also, do not feel that the cost is too much. Once you buy the system, changing filters seasonallyy is only $25. That is worth it to protect your engine.

Call me if you need help.

Buy Racor,

Capt. Ed

That's pretty much it.  Cut the existing fuel line between the fuel tank and primer bulb.

There should be directions with the mounting unit for the filter.  The filter should be between the tank and primer bulb.  Make sure the line from the tank is on the proper side of the mounting unit. (Follow the arrows on the mounting unit) The arrow pointing in is for the tank line, the arrow pointing out goes to the primer bulb.
Make sure the filter is rated for 10 microns.

Also, I would highly suggest getting the filter with the see-thru bowl on the bottom so you can readily see any water and drain it.

The filter units work with any engine manufacturer.  They are not engine brand specific.

Install the mounting unit where it will be easy to see the bowl and get to in order to drain/change the filter element.

This is a site I found just to give you a ball park idea on the price and what the unit looks like.  You may be able to do better, I don't know.

Shouldn't be much more than a half hour/one hour project.

PS: use stainless steel hose clamps.   t^

One more thing I forgot.  They make two different mounting units.  One is powder coated white and the other is stainless.  GET THE STAINLESS ONE.  It will not look like crap in a month like the powder coated one.

Hi All,

Thanks for posting the Racor picture without the primer on it Irish!

One question from me ... do they put the gasoline barbs in the package or do you but them sepaarately? I think they are separate.

Mboy - Where are you located? I am sure someone can recommend a good place to help you pick up the stuff you need.

Good luck,

Capt. Ed

Capt Ed,
They do not come with the unit.  I just replaced my powder coated with the stainless one over the winter and had to use the old ones from the old mount.

You guys are GERAT, thanks.

I live up North in west paterson, but the boat will live @ Wagner's in Keyport.
Ed, I may have to take you up on your offer. I am willing to trade some computer work (upgrades, installs, cleanups, etc :) and most certainly a fishing trip on my boat as well.

Thanks Hotrod, I hope so :)

At least I let the wife pick it out for most part (of course the most expensive and newest we were looking at :)

Hi Mboy,

I own a large software/engineering company (LOL)!

I will take a coffee. No problem coming up to Keyport to help you out.

If you are buying this from a dealer, try to negotiate them installing one. If they use a Sierra, it is a quick change out.

See you soon,

Capt. Ed

Hi Mboy,

If you are buying it by Lightning Jacks, we can tow it to my house or my marina (both less than 5 miles away).

Just a thought,

Capt. Ed

That figures :)

They won't let me negotiate anything into the boat. Getting it pretty cheap so they won't do any extras.
Unfortunately, no trailer. I am taking her up North the old fashioned way- By sea :)

I will have a gallon of coffee waitin' for ya- How do you take it?

I recently installed a pair of Racor water seperators with the clear bowl and they cost me about $100.00 each for the whole set up. I bought them from Garden State Marine.in Point Pleasant It's a piece of cake to install
