Blasting old bottom paint off
« on: March 10, 2009, 06:44:52 PM »
I need to get a couple of coats of old ablative paint off the bootom.

Anone know of a reasonably priced place to do this. I got a price of $1200.00 to soda blast and paint and that seems high to me...

I have a 3800 psi power washer that does the trick.  If you need help with it, I can make myself available.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

$1200 actually sounds low if it includes blasting, fairing, 3-5 epoxy barrier coats, and 2 ablative coats + materials. I called around a few places and everyone was similarly priced. Sometimes it is worth it to pay a little more, aka sometimes you get what you pay for. Check your PMs.

A good power washing may or may not do it. If you don't mind getting dirty and wet, while your blasting, take a good scrub brush and start scrubbin. Ablative paint should soften and come off. If you see lots of colored water, you know its coming off.
If you do want to soda blast, you do have to apply a barrier coat or a coat of epoxy  on before the bottom paint.
Give me your boat info and I'll get you a price.
Matt

Thanks a lot.

I was wondering if a good power washing would do it...

BnB, here is something I found on removing bottom paint. Several different methods, as some have mentioned.

Before you begin keep in mind that you need to be aware of any environmental hazard. If you are doing this at a boat yard, check with the marina personnel on their policy for bottom paint removal. Some will not allow it, others will but you need to use a drop cloth to catch the old paint and any drippings from the new paint.

Seems to me that the $1200 would be money well spent if it includes everything, as WB already said.

Good luck on your project.  t^

basnblues,
The marina I'm located in gets $70ft to soda blast, epoxy coat and bottom paint. Let me know. I may be able to get you a much better deal. Matt
