New to forum and this wicked cold state..lol
« on: April 06, 2009, 01:49:57 PM »
Hello pepz
Thought it was bout time I found a board and got my local scoop on the fishing. Moved here from South Texas a couple years ago next July and have yet to wet a line..  nts

So I finally met a guy that tells me about how he likes to fish the surf here and there. Took about 5 minutes and I was chomping at the bit!

So my fishing background is mostly surf with some bay activity as I was a yak owner and will be again soon. Sharks, Redfish, Founder, Black Drum, and of course the illusive Tarpon and Ling further south around Padre Island National Seashore (PINS). The last 2 on that list never made it to my list of landed on the beach.. but the freight train hookups were fun.

Been looking long and hard at the Google Satellite Images for areas of secluded beach that are 4x4 only "hard core fishing" types.
Noticed the IBSP at the Pass. Though it would appear to make more sense to load the yak and paddle from the south Jetty side out to the North Jetty.

I know this is a NJ board but anyone here ever get to the Eastern most tip of NY .. IMAGES look awesome with all the rocks in the water.

One thing we seriously lack in Texas is structure in the water other than the Sand bars due to shallow water.. Im really curious about the water depths and how castable they are.

Well this post is nearly a ramble.. so here I am, whats up and oh area there any members here from the EC crew?

Welcome Aboard sHArK,

Man that was some move.  Where about are you located now?  I am thinking in NY somewhere by your almost ramble,  ;D

I am in Toms River and IBSP is almost in my back yard as I am only a few minutes away.  If you are into Yaking check out our newer forum about Kayaking.  I will be the newbie there as I just bought a Hobie Quest and am waiting for delivery.

As far as fishing in this area I have had over 50 years pounding the surf here and I love the verity we have here.  Although it is nothing like the ring of Gulf states but its home.

If you look at IBSP on the bay side there are some really cool flats and sedge islands back there that hold tons of fish but the trick is to fish the early morning or the dusk windows.  I have been back there fly fishing and wading with fish jumping all around you.  It is full of Striped Bass, Bluefish, Weakfish, some winter flounder and Fluke in season of course and sharks as well.

The park has a couple of places to put canoes and kayaks in A17 and A21 are the favorite spots. It is an easy paddle to excellent fishing the only problem is in the summer with the green head flies which is another reason to go at night or before sun up.

As far as traversing the inlet you might want to think that one over as in the summer the tides and the influx of the boaters it outrageous.  The price of the yearly sticker is well worth the hassles later on.

If I can be of any assistance just give me a PM or post here and if I can help I will be glad to.  If you would like to see the park first hand before you decide I can take you out there for your first run.  But once you see what the park offers I think you will go for the price of the stamp especially if you are as avid an angler as you say.

Happy Catching

Paul

I'm in Rockaway, NJ but like any true angler
I will travel for a saltwater fix. The mention of places to launch the yaks.. I will look into these, as Im accustomed to being able to pretty much drive anywhere and throw the Yak in the water, but while keeping out of the dunes of course. Im 124 miles from the Jetties at IBSP.
I'm but a few miles from 287&80

You mention fly fishing.. I have a custom 8wt rod I seldom got to use in Texas due to the relentless winds. I may have to break that out again and give her a whirl. Would be [pretty sweet to get back into that. Light tackle rocks.
Guess I better get another Yak. I use to have a Dagger Cayman, but sold it before I left Texas.
Will start pleading my case for a new one to the wife..lol..

So Weakfish are like Speckled Trout we have down south right? Aggressive Bite, Soft mouth, plows topwaters and popping corks?

Fluke are Flounder that are here in the spring like they are in the fall along Texas coasts..
Love to freeline small finger mullet for those or throw DOA's

Stripped Bass..they are a new one, though I seen them on TV and imagine the fight like the big Redfish we call Bull Reds down south. They get up to 50" and when larger are called Buffalo Reds.. though extremely rare. 47 1/2" is my personal best.

Sharks.. well I have kinda lost my lust for shark fishing as I only care to CPR them anymore. Sold all my 12/o's anyways.  rgmn

will get another post together here on gear..after looking for classifieds

You might want to have some fun with the guys on the board as we have a number of shark outings at the park and Ken, Surfrocket brings his magic wands and we have a ball.  BTW it is for the whole family, bonfire and eats pretty good time is had by all.  I am sure he will expound on this.

It usually happens during the summer months at night on the beach pretty cool and you get to meet a great bunch of folks.  No need for the pass as most of everything is accessible by the main road but it sure beats walking over the dunes.

The layout of the park is excellent as you will eventually see.

My newer post may clear it up, but long story short. Our water has little structure and evel less depth down in Texas and you must get way the HE double hockey stick out there to hit 12' of water. Here I susect the water gets deep fast and just about anything can be caught 75yds off the beach..lol..Im guessing.  ;D

On another note, I look forward to some of these beach gatherings. I have a family of 5 that love to hit the beach, when I allow room in the jeep for more than gear and a fishing buddy.  chrz

Priorities I guess... ;D

Most of the fish I catch is inside the bar and 75 yards is pretty much it.  But there is that time when you do need the extra spring in the rod to launch your bait out there.  But for the most part it is a nice easy toss.

K, got it!  Hope you and your family have oceans of fun!  I suspect they'll love IBSP.  If, you plan on 'jeepn' at IBSP, you may want to check out:  http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/island.html

Example:

MANDATORY EQUIPMENT FOR A MOBILE SPORTFISHING VEHICLE (MSFV)

Permits are issued to 4-wheel drive vehicle owners for fishing purposes only. Carrying the basic equipment listed is required whenever the MSFV in on the beach.
1) Fishing equipment and bait and tackle for each person over 12 years of age;
2) Tire gauge;
3) Spare tire;
4) Workable jack and board/support for jack in sand (3/4 in. x 12 x 12 in. plywood square minimum size)
5) Tow chain or snatch line;
6) Shovel;
7) Flashlight;
8) Fire extinguisher;
9) Auto first aid kit;
10) Litter/trash bag;
11) Minimum of 1/4 tank of fuel.

A current tide chart is highly recommended.  Jumper cables for the vehicle's specific battery type are also recommended.

Things are bigger in IBSP!   rofla

Thanks Joe
I found that while digging and am glad to see they dont just let any numnutts go out on the beach..lol..in south texas when the beach is packed flat you will see VW BUGS 60 miles down a 4x4 only beach..and you know they are the first ones to blame the park when the tide eats their cars.

Tows off of that beach (PINS)cost over a grand usually.. I blew the 4x4 out of a Durango at mile marker 55 and spent 2 days getting off the beach after a duce & 1/2 broke a front spindel trying to get to me..lol..

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh my new fishing friend here in jersey has no idea what he has gotten into  >:D

Hey sHArK,

Weakfish can be an aggressive fish, but they aren't often caught on topwater baits.  (At least not in my experience.)

BTW, we have speckled trout here too! ;D

Nice Speck Bucktail..  :P

Whats the "prime" season on those guys? In the south it was pretty much year round, I usually only fished them when I saw Bait Balls moving along the beach, at the Rock Jetties at dusk and dawn.. The nice thing was you could fish the same plastics or live baits for any of the Trout, Redfish, or Flounder. It was like potluck.
