Fishing out back still the key to catching
« on: April 18, 2009, 12:00:57 AM »
Hi All,

If you have the opportunity to get out fishing at IBSP Saturday do your self a favor and try fishing out back in the areas from A15 down to A21.  Waders are the call for the day but bass will be on the menu that night if you are able to get back there.

Whatever you use make sure it is small wiggly and looks good.  Fish it slow and try to keep everything in mid water column as that is where the bite has been this past week.

I will be trying out my new kayak so I might not be fishing but if the bite really heats up I will have to curtail the getting used to part to fishing.  I love this time of year as the fish are beginning to hit aggressively and man there is no better feeling than a bass hitting a lure at full speed.

If you want to try fishing for the bass right before sun up.  If you get a chance just go to the end of the kayak launch road at A21 and listen to the bass crashing the surface it is fantastic.  For fishing that time of day you want a dark colored plug something like a 5" black Mombo Minnow or something close to it on color and size.

If you are like me I like to have my favorite fly rod along as well try a grass shrimp pattern or a Deceiver even an Assassin type of fly they all will work.  When I make mine I usually tie them in different color pastern so I can try to make them strike.  Lately the White and chartreuse color pattern in an Assassin pattern has been working well.  I have been tying mine on a 2/0 circle hook that has been known to work quite will.  Remember to let the hook do the work don't set the hook like your trying to land a battleship.

Good Luck

Happy Catching

Paul

Hey ped I just signed up on this site about 5 mins ago and came across this post as one of my first. I must say you give alot of detail out in this post that I'm not used to seeing. Nice job! For myself as a new comer of only having fished the surf for 3 seasons posts like this rapidly increase the learning curve. Thx again! I look forward to posting here.

Hi TIEDROPE,

I am glad to help.  Like I have told many I have been fishing this stretch of water for over 50 years and I had to learn by following some old salts that are not around any more.  The information they passed along to me is not mine to keep.  I have to be open and honest about the sport I have enjoyed for so long.

If there is a new way of doing something I am all ears and would appreciate it if anyone puts me on fish in a more productive way.

All in all this site has got to be the best site for doing just that.  We are not afraid to pass along any information, especially to people just starting out, it is hard enough today just going out to outfit your self with the basics.  Why not steer them to areas that are known to hold fish.  By the same token the fish might be in an area one hour and gone the next so I have no fear in spot burning as I do not believe fish are in any one place long enough.

That is why I and others have written articles on many aspects of fishing from how to read the surf to how to tie knots.  If you want to learn you have come to the right place.  Heck we have 16 year olds on here who a year ago were asking simple questions that are now answering questions and people have no idea that they are following the words of a teenager.

So,Welcome Aboard to the best saltwater fishing site around.  We are not boisterous about it, no need to be we are growing steadily and that speaks volums.

So kick off yopur shoes, grab an adult beverage if you can and enjoy.  Any questions just throw them out there and if you have something to add please by all means post away.

Happy Catching

Paul

Hey Paul,

Thanks for the warm welcome, I've been fishing for a long time more freshwater then salt but over the last couple of years I've started surf fishing and really grown to like it. There are so many areas to fish yet so little time!

Good choice HK27.  At that time of day you should do well.  Just be careful as there are a few soft spots out there.  If you walk in at 21 try around the dock to the south as it is a little deeper there, again be careful it gets deep, by deep I mean over your waders for sure.  If you walk north it is great till you get to the first small creek.

Enjoy

Happy Catching
