Fishfinder rig for stripers
« on: April 21, 2009, 11:37:57 AM »
Ive been reading some posts about using fishfinder rigs. Some of them say that when using braid that it can wear through the slide hole. I'm looking for some illustrations on how to tie in a fishfinder rig using braid as my main line.

They now make slider rigs for braided line. They are a greenish color. Put your line thru the slider and tie a polomar knot to a swivel. Tie your leader to the other end of the swivel. Use a circle hook, size depending on bait, on the other end of the leader.

I tryed to use the fishfinder rigs and I change back over to a three way. I like to feel the rig and the weight Sorry I don't fish braid but I just picked up a nice rod and reel off a guy with braid. Looks like it is time to give it a try.

Thanks Rugman.. Do the beads come with the fishfinder that you know of? And is it necessary to use a shock leader?

thats the only thing I do when clamming for stripers.  Most of the time you want to reel all the slack out of the line till you feel the bait, THEN count 1 arm length out and lock your bail.  The fish will feed at different levels so you need to find where they are biting.  If no action, then your next cast, reel in the slack till you feel the weight and then let 2 arm lengths out.  Or have different poles at different lengths until you find the bite

do not use beads or white finder rigs ,new lead is a no no also ,we soak our lead so it is dirty and dicolored ,reason being is old yellow eye ,he will attack your gear and bite your rig off, new lead is shiney and flash's so he thinks it is food ,last thing you want is to have a bass hooked and have a blue come up and hit your rig and set that bass free.if you dont use the bait runner from a pier bring your swim trunks cuz you will be looking for your rod in the water ,I tie my rods down when pier fishing

Just hold on to the rod .Alot of Stripers will clean of a blood worm in no time .If you are fishing with cut bait ,that would be a good thing to do . Good LUCK out there t^

When they're thick I've seen them hit the swivel that some use to connect their braid and leader...and they were not even shiney swivels.

All excellent information so far.

I pre-tie all of my rigs on mono or fluro and then attach them to my main line...either a shock leader or directly to the braid.  I have never tried tying rigs on braid?!?!

I stay away from anything flashy on the setups too for the atlantic pirahna problem.  I do use beads though...anything that is the least shiny.  I use the beads mainly to avoid breaking off or weakening the knots, especially casting from the surf.  I use black swivels too and have been trying black metal crimps instead of knots to eliminate the beads.  The crimps seem to work really well and make "tying" rigs very easy!  The only negative is the setups now have more metal on them...so I don't know??

Remember, if you use a circle hook in your setup, you have to snell it, otherwise it may not work as planned.

I have never seem them sold like you would buy a package of bait holders.  If you buy a setup though, with a circle hook, I would have to say 100% it will be snelled.  It is really easy to snell your own hooks...
