Delaware River Herring
« on: April 21, 2009, 05:43:25 PM »
Looking to catch some for bait but will be shore bound. Haven't been to Trenton  to do this in years. Will be going tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday 4/22 )to check it out. Heard access to the river is limited and areas are closed because of some unknown reasons. Anybody know what's up?

I think the bridge Construction.  You use to be able to get to the wall, By Katmandu.. But it looks like that's also fenced in..  I drive by it every day and don't see anyone from shore.. I will ask a few at work tomorrow that fish it

Area around Katmandu is closed because the wall is unsafe. They were supposed to repair this but have not done so to date. They are now saying, maybe next year.

Went to Trenton today for herring and to check it out. Catching was ng, fishing was great weather wise anyway. Lots of boats but only saw a few herring caught. Access as far as I could see was not permitted at Katmandu but we tried behind the baseball park and a few other spots down river. They're not making it too easy these days. Access is tough ! We'll get em next time t^

A couple of my buddies were out on the Delaware today. Took them over four hours to catch five herring.

They took the hearing and livelined them and brought in two stripers and had two other run offs.

All in all, it was a lousy day for herring catching.

When NJ Angler did their Delaware River Shad show they mentioned that both shad and herring numbers were significantly lower in the river in the last few years than in any of the years past.  From what they said, herring and shad follow similar spawning patterns and always return to the same River where they "hatched."  The lower numbers don't mean that the population is in trouble, but that the fish that were born there are not returning or turned into fish bait somewhere else :P.  This can be very normal and tends to be cyclical at times.  Maybe, this is just not a good herring year??

Herring were there today so we stayed for a few hours and picked away. Mostly singles on the sabiki rigs. Took about 50 for 3 of us fishing. Should be better with the warm air temps over the next few days  TT^

I'm Not sure who told you this Rod But I am 2 minutes from the rivewr in Morrisville. Yes there is plenty of shore line to fish and you can launch a canoe or kayak or small motor boats from the shore line. But as far as catching herring from the pa. side is a no go for herring they like the deep water of the channel.....
