fireplace tool on a boat???

Here's an innovative tip I got from a buddy in Florida.
With all the endangered spinney doggies around nowadays, pick up a set of fireplace log tongs.  Pay particular attention to the end that grips the log.  It makes a great holding tool for the spinney dog while you are removing the hook from the critter.  Just grab the doggie in front of the dorsal fin.  Reduces the risk of getting hit with a spike on the doggie.
Works like a charm.

I do a similar thing for eels, take a set of plastic tongs and glue the rub scrub part of a sponge on the ends.....picks up eels with no problem

Great idea.  I also heard of the one for the eel's.

Spiny dogs, your not talking about the Sand Sharks, are you.  The only fish that will prick from what I recall are the spiny skates, or is that what your referring to as dogs.

Spiny dogfish are similar to what everyone refers to as sand sharks.  They have two spines on them, thus the name spiny.  They usually also have spots on them.

thats what if figured, I just grab those suckers, didn't realize there were spines on them.  Got lucky all these years I guess.

From what I remember about five years ago there was an older gentleman on a boat alone.  He got stuck with a spine and almost bleed out before another boater came alongside to investigate why he didn't see anyone on the boat.  Found the guy laying on the deck, bleeding to death.

If I remember right, it was near Beach Haven.  Perhaps MissBeachHaven knows more details or can confirm this.

That looks like a smooth dogfish your holding.  They pretty much appear the same but you will see the spine in front of both top fins on the spiny.

I have only seen the spiny doggies when the water is cold. Mostly after october. They have white flecks on the top side of them.

It used to be like that.  Cold water fish.  Now they are all over the place.  Will be here probably till late June.

That cooler crate is really neat ... i'm gonna give it a shot and build one.
So you basically put ice in the bottom of the cooler and the crate on top of the ice with the killies in it? Anything between the crate and the ice?

You got it Nick.  You don't need anything between the ice and insert.  You shouldn't have to but just make sure you drain the water from the melted ice if need be.  You don't want the killies to be laying in any water.
