Night fishing lure selection
« on: May 09, 2009, 02:34:24 PM »
I've been fishing the shores of barnegat bay this spring exclusively. I've had success during low light hours but once completely dark, it seems to cut off. A toss a chicken scratch mambo minnow during the day but have not found a lure as successful to use at night. Just trying to get an idea as to what everyone is using at night.

If you like using a Mombo during the day you will enjoy using it at night, just pick up the lure in black. The rule is the lighter the day the lighter the lure and the reverse is true for night fishing the darker it gets the darker the lure. Blacks and deep purples are great for night fishing. Follow this and you should do fine.

i have a black bomber that i've been trying with no success. It might be that special action of the mambo 5hrug I've always followed that rule for matching. As soon as i tie on that bomber the fish disappear rgmn i'll just pick one up in a black/ purple pattern

Thanks Paul

I second the mambo in black.  I have had success with pink zoom or fin-s type lures at night too.

The thing with the different lures like the Bomber and the Mombo especially those two is the lip.  The lip on the Mombo is significantly smaller than the Bomber giving each its distinctive swimming pattern.  You might try to slow down the retrieve on the Bomber and see what happens.  The swaying back and forth will or should be cut down quite a bit.  You will never get the 2 to react the same but if you are trying that would be the way to come close.

Not to mention the depth that each one swims at.  The bomber being the deeper of the 2.

I hope this helps.

Happy Catching

That's a great point!  Each of these lures all target different areas in the water column and have distinctly different actions.

well, I stuck to the bomber tonight and had a few blues at the south end of the canal. I will pick up a mambo because most of the areas i fish are shallow and the bomber seems to run a bit too low

Slow the speed of the retrieve at night so you are barely turning the handle. You  want to have it just moving. You can not retrieve the bomber slow enough at night.  TT^

A little bit of against the grain info.  Bass are targeting herring inside right now. Use a large shad such as a tsunami or storm in white at night in deeper areas as this is working well. Sometimes size matters  ;D

Pink or rootbeer Fin-s on a jig head

Bucktail with white curlytail worm

BassKandy delights (BKD's) in dark colors on a jig head

Blurple, and black bomber plugs

Picked up a 5" mambo in black. the other night i had countless bluefish with 0 bass mixed in. After seeing a pic of a monster tiderunner caught the other night i might switch to something that will entice weakies a bit more

Sometimes white is right when the light is bright at night! ;D

Definitely try it if your fishing around the full moon or if there is artificial light shining on the water.
