Electric Problem?

I got the NJDEVIL ready today for the first trip of the season. Put in a new seat put in the fully charged battery and the motor does not start  . It won't even try. My only conclusion is that the electronic system has a problem. Doormat Dan(a good friend) suggested that I spray electrical contact cleaner into the key hole and than try to start the motor. I am out of cleaner so I will try this tomorrow. Does anyone else has any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

Outboard? Check to make sure the kill lanyard is connected. Sometimes the obvious is very easy to overlook.

Lube the key hole. Won't do a thing for you. All the key hole does is lets the switch turn. The 'switch' may be bad, that is different than the key hole.

Also, another obvious often overlooked...make sure you are in neutral. Could also be a neutral safety switch that is bad.

It is a outboard, 48hp Evinrude. Kill lanyard is connected that was the first thing I checked. I will start by first replacing the switch if that is not it I will try the replacing the neutral safety switch. Thanks for the help.

let me tell you.. YEARS ago, that kill switch really got the best of me.  One day I had a friend of my clean the boat while I was cleaning the fish.. When I clean the boat I know what NOT to touch, my friend didn't.  The following week I couldn't figure it out to save my life.

The FIRST thing you need to do.. Is see if you have a spark.

Pull a wire, stick a screw driver in it and let it rest close to the head, block or a bolt.

Then go from there.

NJ Dev. Take a look at your battery cables and make sure they have Excellant contact to you batteries.

Clean the battery Terminals and make sure the connections are tight....this would cause the prob. And as was previously said the lanyard or neutral safety switch

put a volt meter on the battery and make sure you have over 12 volts. You might have gotten a bad battery or it might just have been sitting on the shelf and needs a charge.

Battery is brand new and has a full charge. I am going to pull out the ignition switch tonight to see if the fuse is bad or if I need to replace the switch. Thank for all the help guys .
