Pilot -Tastee day 6/1
« on: June 01, 2009, 07:41:39 PM »
Got the call from Don yesterday to see if there was interest in looking for the bunker and bass.  Didn't take too much arm twisting.1  >:D
Launched out of Keyport and headed south along the beach to spy on reports that the bunk were heavy near belford.  On arrival, we saw birds working and fish bustin the surface. Net was at the ready and a few casts were made. Empty nets  ???  Closer inspection.... looked like the bluefish were wreaking havoc with what looked like rainfish.  Man was that a let down.  >:(  We were a good way off from port and decided to make way to the knoll.  With a smorgasbord of clams (already shucked and some in shell) it was an easy decision.

Locked up tight in 19 ft of water, light winds and moving water.  Clams were out in no time.  Had a couple fish sniffing around and a few runoffs but kept loosing fish near the boat (no positive ID but sure felt and acted like bass).  Shortly afterwards Don sets the hook nicely and first fish is landed.  Same happens with me.  Unfortunately, they were of the Demon variety (still fun to fight).  We wrestled with a pick of a few skates, some more bluefish and finally about 1.5 hr before slack Don catches the only striped one.   ;D  The slow bite we had died off so we pulled anchor and went back toward Keyport to try our luck on the flatties.

We were only planning a half day so the move was timely.  We put out squid, gulp, killies and every combo thereof.  The naked killie seemed to be the ticket today.  Don's first fish is a nice 4.5 lb.  We continued to do short drifts over a productive area pulling up plenty of shorts.  Spent the next 1.5 hrs working the area to end the day with four decent fish in the box then called it a day.

Thanks Donnie and Big Don for a great day.  We'll have to make it outside sometime next week to work some structure and see what we can put together.

Good day of fishing. Much better than skunk and work.
A good day of fishing is better than a bad day of fishing. A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work. That means work sucks!

Capt D./T-bone,

We'll have to get out to verify  ;)  Let's keep eye on weather for Friday or early next week.
