FB 7/11 Fluke
« on: July 12, 2009, 10:35:29 AM »
Our potential 4 man crew as usual, came down to Dibbs and I at the dock in Keansburg at 630  5hrug As I got Fluka warmed up and ready, dave made a few throws with the net and rustled up a few dozen 2-3" peanuts for the livewell, to add to our bait selection.. Made a couple  stops along the reach from K-burg heading East, but desptie a decent drift had few bites and no keeps..On our way east, we ran into a pile of Bluefish working bait, and had some fun jiggin a few up.. We boxed a few for strip baits, and to bring to Ma who loves 'em..As the blues kept moving north fast, we let 'em be and made our way toward the tip of Hook and joined a sizable but well spaced fleet drifting  there.. Dave soon drew first blood on a keeper with one just over 18" , and from there we had a steady bite the rest of the outgoing.. After boxing my 1st keeper, and having another 20 incher throw my bucktail on the surface,  I had a vicious whack my 3oz spro tipped with a peruvian, and set up on something heavy.. I knew from the machine gun head shake that I had a nice fluke and told dave to get the net.. After a couple minutes, and some mild pucker inducing moments boatside he slid the net under my best fluke to date..a fine specimen that had my 30# boga bouncing between 7.5 and 8 lbs!  thud   After much hi-5ing and pics we got back to business..The wind had really started picking up by then, but we where able to maintain a decent drift and pick away until the tide changed..We had the pleasure of chatting with Nick on LS3 around the change, after which, we spent the rest of the day trying to find a little relief from the wind and a civilized drift.. To that end, we began to work our way back west and managed a few more keepers, including a fat 5lber that ate my 6oz bucktail/bluefish strip combo.. In general, we had  way fewer bites this trip, but a much better class of fish.. I varied from 2-6oz jigs tipped with various baits, but the bluefish strips really seemed a favorite..  By about 3 o'clock we had enough of the rockin and rollin, and headed back to the barn with a a few 3-4# Blues 7 nice Flukes in the box, including the new boat record  ;D    chrz

Great fish.  We had the same kind of day yesterday, less action but better fish.  Congrats.
