This thing kicked my butt!
« on: July 13, 2009, 01:26:08 PM »
The wife and I were fishing the Ocean City inlet catching nothing but shorts. I got this one hit and I set the hook. Thought I was hooked up on the bottom and then it started to take drag. After about 15 min I got it to the boat. Turns out to be a cow noise Ray. This thing had to go 3 to 4 feet wide.
At least it was fun!
Fishing Sandy Hook and anywhere I can get on a boat.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife sells all of my fishing tackle for what she thinks I paid for it!

Can you keep them?  Or are they protected?  That would be one heck of a fillet!

Nice catch!  A lot of folks hook up with those things in the surf around here and never even know what they had on, because they get spooled.   I know, because when I ran the B&T on LBI I would hear all the "Humungous Striper!" stories from anglers coming in with bare spools. nts  ;D
They normally show up in our surf around mid-August or so.  Sightings of the rays are often followed by shark scares as well, since the sharks will feed on them. t^

caught one off the ammo pier a number of years back. Thought it was a small shark until i reeled it in and thought it was a world record skate, upon further inspection, it was a cow nosed ray. Great time, nice catch

They are fun!  They come into the Barnegat Bay by the 1000's and feed on the clam beds.

Sounds like a great vacation.
