A day of sharking 7-14-09
« on: July 14, 2009, 10:14:38 PM »
With our some what dismal fluke outings (out Sunday and Monday with only had a few keepers) of catching many more shorts than keepers (except for the one that counted on Saturday  TT^) we decided to hit the mud hole for some sharking for a change of pace.

Me, Captain Mike, Bob G and Johnny Oz hit the dock at 6 this morning. We motored over for some fuel and then headed out to the Monster Ledge.

We arrived at the ledge and drifted a few minutes to see what direction the drift would be taking us.

After noting the drift direction we picked out beginning spot and put out three lines. Shortly after the lines were out we had a quick run off on the deep line. No hook up. Next the middle line went off. Again, no hook up. Then the third line. You guessed it, no hook up. Figured it was blue fish or a small shark playing with the baits. We then see a small hammer head shark in our slick. He didn't stay long. A bait was pitched to him but he got out of Dodge.

With new baits on all lines the deep line gets hit again. I grab the rod and lean back, setting the hook. After a brief fight a small mako comes boatside. Beautiful fish, small, released.  t^

A short while later Capt Mike gets hooked up and brings in a blue shark. Also released. As he was bringing in the blue shark the short line starts to pay out. Bob G gets on the rod and brings a hammer head, possibly the same one that was in our slick earlier, to the boat. A third species of shark caught, also released.

All in all, a great day on the water. The weather was perfect and we had a lot of action in the morning. Gotta get another trip in soon.  t^

The only pics I got were of the hammerhead at the boat.

At least you had action.  Did you see any other life out there?

Saw one sea turtle. Nothing else.

Had about a 2-3 foot chop in the AM going out that made it hard to see anything that may have been around. Flattened out nice for the ride home. That's when we spotted the turtle.  t^

Saw a lot of birds but they were not diving on anything. Had no marks in the area where the birds were.

Very cool...They caught one off our beach in Hawaii the second night we were here.  Funny thing though the women did not want to go swimming after that, don't know why.  5hrug
